HONG KONG, Mar 4, 2024 – (ACN Newswire) –  Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 40th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and 10th HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show gathered over 4,000 exhibitors from 44 countries and regions. The Jewellery Show concluded at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today and the Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show closed at AsiaWorld-Expo on Saturday, marking the successful return of the “two shows, two venues” format for the first time since the pandemic.

The shows attracted some 81,000 buyers from 137 countries and regions. The Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show drew over 31,000 buyers from 125 countries and regions, while more than 49,000 buyers from 132 countries and regions joined the Jewellery Show. For the two shows together, buyers from Mainland China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand and the United States ranked top in terms of non-Hong Kong visitors, underscoring the shows’ leading world position.

Exhibitors and buyers were optimistic about a thriving jewellery market. An on-site survey of 1,435 respondents found 62.3% anticipated growth in overall sales in the next one to two years while 31.3% expected stable sales and only 6.4% predicted a decrease.

Sophia Chong, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: “The twin jewellery shows successfully attracted buyers from around the world to return to Hong Kong, and it is very encouraging. Exhibitors stated that buyers had shown a positive sentiment on purchasing, and had connected with new clientele, including those from emerging markets, which is crucial for business growth.”

“For the upcoming exhibition peak season, the HKTDC will present some 10 business fairs next month, encompassing a wide range of industries including innovation, electronics, gifts, home products, fashion and packaging. These events will serve as platforms for buyers and suppliers to make business and connect, and in turn solidify Hong Kong’s position as a global exhibition centre and bring substantial economic benefits to the city.”

Under the hybrid EXHIBITION+ format, the twin jewellery shows combined in-person access at the venues with online negotiations via HKTDC’s Click2Match smart business-matching platform, which will be available until 11 March, and buying through hktdc.com Sourcing. The HKTDC launched the self-authentication service at this year’s twin shows, enabling buyers to verify identities and obtain electronic badges (eBadges) in advance for rapid, seamless access to venues, greatly enhancing the trade show experience. Most buyers welcomed this eBadge arrangement, including the self-authentication feature and entry arrangements.

The HKTDC surveyed exhibitors and buyers on-site, with key findings below:

Market and industry outlook

Exhibitors reported higher sales than last year

Trading at the twin shows was promising. One Hong Kong exhibitor, Jessica Kwan, Director of Universal Jewellery Design Centre Limited, said: “We have been participating in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show since its inception. Over the past 40 editions, our business grew together with the show and our jewellery products are exported worldwide today. During the fairs, we met with new buyers from Mainland China, the Philippines and the Middle East. We expect the sales turnover generated by this year’s show to increase by 20%.”

At the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem, and Pearl Show, one of the exhibitors, Rosaria Borriello, Manager of Borriello Massimo from Italy said: “We love the Hong Kong show very much. It’s the perfect place to do business and meet customers from everywhere. Our Mediterranean red coral showcased this year has again attracted strong buyers’ interest. Customers from Mainland China, India and the Philippines are still our biggest buyers. We’ve also received enquiries from several buyers from the United States. Sales from Hong Kong’s exhibition contribute more than 20% of our business. This show is really important for business expansion.”

From a buyer’s perspective, Nezar J. Mukhtar, Managing Director of Jamla Jewelry from Saudi Arabia, said: “The Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show draws a large number of industry players from all over the world and serves as the best sourcing platform. Talks are now underway with three exhibitors from Hong Kong and India for loose diamonds in different sizes, colours and shapes. I’ve also looked for new suppliers and expected to conclude at least US$10 million worth of business. The fair is the perfect place for business expansion.”

Chanyut Khieonavavongsa, Graduate Gemologist (GIA) from Tassabee Gems in Thailand, said: “I’ve been in the jewellery business for 40 years, I visit the HKTDC Jewellery Show regularly because I find more attractive designs and more new suppliers here than at other shows. I have placed orders with four to five suppliers from Hong Kong, Korea and Türkiye for US$100,000 worth of 18K gold mountings. I plan to buy at least US$100,000 worth of finished jewellery at the show too. I like the brand new online self-authentication function within the HKTDC Marketplace App for direct admission. It helps me save queuing time and is very convenient.”

Exciting line-up of technology and lifestyle fairs set for next month

Hot on the heels of the twin jewellery shows, the HKTDC will organise a series of trade fairs including the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) and the inaugural Smart Lighting Expo from 6-9 April; InnoEx and Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) from 13-16 April; and Fashion InStyle, Home InStyle, Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair, Hong Kong International Printing and Packaging Fair, the brand new Deluxe Printpack Hong Kong and Hong Kong International Licensing Show late next month. Winning designs raise curtain on HKTDC Hong Kong jewellery shows

  • The 25th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition award ceremony was held today and winning designs, resonating with the Contemporary Heritage theme, are on display in Hall 1E at the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show
  • Open Group Best of Show Awards convey themes of love and memories, neon signs, and traditional Chinese craftsmanship
  • All Student Group prizes went to Hong Kong Design Institute students

HONG KONG, Mar 1, 2024 – (ACN Newswire) – Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 40th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and 10th HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show are being held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) and AsiaWorld-Expo respectively. The award ceremony of the 25th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition, a key event of the twin jewellery shows, was held at the HKCEC today, paying tribute to the outstanding creativity of local talents. Jewellery industry players can admire the winning designs at the display in Hall 1E.

Jointly organised by the HKTDC, the Hong Kong Jewellers’ & Goldsmiths’ Association,  Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association and the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China, the 25th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition aims to discover talents for the industry, elevate Hong Kong design excellence and promote exquisite jewellery collections designed and manufactured in Hong Kong to international buyers.

In line with the Contemporary Heritage theme, competition participants skillfully combined traditional craftsmanship with modern designs to create fashionable jewellery which embodied the significance of craftsmanship across generations and echo the twin jewellery shows’ theme this year, Be Part of the Splendid Legacy.

A distinguished panel of six jewellery and design sector professionals evaluated both Open Group and Student Group entries based on creativity and innovation, aesthetics, craftsmanship, wearability and topic relevance. Marketability was a sixth criterion for the Open Group.

Open Group winners showcase Contemporary Heritage

One of the three Open Group Best of Show Awards went to Swan Chung for Kid IT Bag (Category: Bracelet/ Necklace). Ms Chung received a coin purse from her grandfather when she was a child, inspiring her to incorporate the double-clasp concept it into her design. She wished all “grown-up kids” could own beloved treasures forever to pass on the love and memories.

Another Best of Show Award winner was Joanna Shum who used gold, gemstones, diamonds and enamel to recreate Hong Kong’s vibrant neon-lit street views with The Colour of the Neon Sign (Category: Pendant/ Brooch), hoping to preserve this unique visual art permanently.

Chan Hoi-yi also won Best of Show with Born of Blue (Category: Pendant/ Brooch), which weaves the symmetrical Chinese knot feature and tassels into a blue, wavy design, perfectly embodying traditional art which goes beyond boundaries and exemplifies the design excellence of the modern generation.

Dancing lions and fire dragons inspire student group winners

Open to students of institutions registered in Hong Kong, the Student Group category aims to inspire young design talents to join the jewellery design profession. The top three awards went to Hong Kong Design Institute students this year.  Siu Wing-ki was Student Group Champion with Flame Dance Blessing (Category: Bracelet/ Necklace). She used a pearl to emulate the dragon ball guiding fire-dragon dancers and 18 karat gold threads to intricately recreate burning incense sticks, symbolising luck and blessing, on the fire dragon’s body.

Cheung Hoi-lam won the Student Group First Runner-up and Second Runner-Up with two entries: Lion’s Rhythm with Bamboo (Category: Bracelet/ Necklace) and Lion’s Echo of Tradition (Category: Earrings), both with a lion-dance concept. Guangdong Lion Dance is listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Ms Cheung used green gems to bring eyes of the lion to life for the Cai Qing ritual, bringing prosperity. Lion’s Rhythm with Bamboo added the bamboo, traditionally symbolising the virtues of a nobleman.

The Craftsmanship and Technology Award, selected from Open Group and Student Group entries, went to Tse Ka-wing (Category: Ring) for Dance With the Fire Dragon, which presents the delicate features of a fire dragon (including the dragon bone and incense sticks), using 18k gold, diamonds and semi-precious stones. The item turns Hong Kong’s Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance intangible cultural heritage into a fabulous ring, which can be an impressive collectable that brings the owner good health and prosperity.

Exhibitors worldwide gather at twin jewellery venues

The twin jewellery shows run concurrently at two venues. The Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show runs from 27 February to 2 March at AsiaWorld-Expo and the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show from 29 February to 4 March at the HKCEC. Participants can commute between AsiaWorld-Expo and the city centre, including the HKCEC, on shuttle buses.

HKTDC Hong Kong Watch Design Competition mixes creativity, playfulness

HONG KONG, Sep 15, 2023 – (ACN Newswire) – Nearly 15,000 buyers from 95 countries and regions attended the physical exhibitions of the 42nd HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and 11th Salon de TE, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd. The physical exhibitions ended on 9 September but under the hybrid EXHIBITION+ format the online exhibitions continue until 16 September. During the fairs, the results of the 40th Hong Kong Watch Design Competition, also organised by the three organisers, were announced. Winning and finalist entries were prominently displayed to global visitors.

Open Group champion of the 40th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition: Scroll Bar.

To provide industry professionals with the latest market trends and insights from the global watch and clock industry, the HKTDC organised the Hong Kong International Watch Forum on the first day of the fairs (5 September). Representatives from watch associations in Mainland China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea and Switzerland were invited to discuss the industry's regional trade performance and global outlook. On 6 September, the annual Asian Watch Conference was held with the theme, Shaping the Future of Watch: The Next Design Trends. Speakers delved into sustainability in watchmaking as well as the latest trends and future directions of watch design to inspire new ideas.

Hong Kong Watch Design Competition – uncovering talent

The Hong Kong Watch Design Competition has been striving to elevate the design and quality of Hong Kong watches and clocks and encourage creative ideas, while also identifying local design talent and injecting a new impetus into the industry. The competition's 40th edition featured an Open Group and a Student Group, with the themes The Beauty of Perspective and Game Code, respectively. The competition was enthusiastically received, with 84 high-quality entries submitted. Winners were selected by a judging panel comprising nine industry leaders and celebrity judge Jessica Hsuan.

In the Open Group, Tam Kwok Tung emerged as champion with Scroll Bar. By ingeniously manipulating perspective, the design creates a sense of depth within the confined space of the wrist, revealing the aesthetic allure of traditional mechanical watches. The first runner-up was Chan Kar Him with TRAVERSE, which features an entirely transparent case and employs a horizontal assembly method to fully highlight the exquisite craftsmanship of watch movement. Second runner-up was Heromex Watch Company Limited for its design, Mondrian. Inspired by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, the watch uses basic shapes and primary colours to create an abstract composition. The radiating black lines on the dial are complemented by scattered colour blocks and a skeleton movement, expressing the aesthetics of perspective.

Within the Student Group, Wong Yin Yeung of the Youth College International clinched the champion title for his design, TANZZLE. The designer believed the distance between people brought by the pandemic could be bridged by games in the post-pandemic era. His watch features a foldable design and incorporates a Tangram on the watch face. Wearers can engage in exciting matches with friends anytime and anywhere by racing to form various shapes and graphics with the Tangram. The versatile game play and minimalistic design of the watch inspire limitless creativity.

The first runner-up of the Student Group was Pui Hong Yiu of the School for Higher and Professional Education (DILWL) with Over Game, which features a yellow and black square case that resembles a mini arcade game machine. The face of the watch showcases a scene from the classic game Pac-Man. Meanwhile on the back, a maze game with two steel balls represents the Pac-Man characters giving chase and eluding capture. This playful design embodies a work hard, play hard attitude towards life. The second runner-up was Kwong Wai Yin of the Hong Kong Design Institute for Target. Inspired by the ever-challenging claw machines, she created a watch case in the shape of a coin, symbolising a chance to play, as well as a catch-type clasp. The design conveys the idea of seizing every opportunity.

All the winning and finalist entries were displayed during the Watch & Clock Fair, where the Award Presentation Ceremony of the 40th Watch Design Competition cum Fashion x Watch Parade was also held.

Hong Kong International Watch Forum – profitability trends up in Mainland China

The HKTDC hosted the Hong Kong International Watch Forum on 5 September, inviting representatives from watch associations to discuss the industry's most recent regional trade performance and global outlook.

Zhang Hong-guang, Director General of the China Horologe Association, cited statistics on 297 watch and clock enterprises in Mainland China. He pointed out that the industry's cumulative revenue in the first half of this year reached RMB12.491 billion (US$137.5 million), down 11.3% from the previous year, while clock production was 33.6132 million pieces, a year-on-year decline of 9.05% and watch production fell 23.64% to 45.6928 million pieces .

Mr Zhang said: "In the first half of 2023, despite Mainland China's economic development remaining generally steady, the watch and clock industry's revenue fell 11% year-on-year. Cumulative exports rose 2.28% year on year to US$2.252 billion. Among this, exports of watch movements reached US$678 million, up 9.79% over the previous year. Cumulative imports totalled US$2.33 billion, an increase of 11.48% year-on-year. These figures suggest that market demand is recovering. With consumption momentum picking up, the watch and clock industry's production, sales and profitability are all improving, and the market is trending upwards."

Overseas makers' prices and volumes grow

Mari Yamazaki, General Manager of the Japan Clock and Watch Association, reported that there were positive signs of recovery in the Japanese watch and clock markets after travel restrictions were lifted following a prolonged downturn caused by COVID-19. The momentum of recovery had decelerated but Japanese watch exports in the first half of the year still exceeded 42.4 billion yen (US$288 million), marking a 12% year on year rise. Notably mechanical watch sales experienced the most significant growth, surging 26% to reach 11.7 billion yen. This trend underscored the enduring popularity of mechanical watches among consumers over the past decade, with high-end watch prices aligning with global trends.

According to Dr Guido Grohmann, Managing Director of the German Association of Jewellery, Watches, Clocks & Supplying Industry, German watch and clock exports recorded a 10% year on year increase last year, rising from EUR1.5 billion (USD1.61 billion) to EUR1.702 billion. Imports also rebounded, escalating from EUR1.865 billion in 2020 to EUR2.195 billion in 2021. Furthermore, the import volume in the previous year reached a new high of EUR2.524 billion, up 15.1% on the year.

Dr Jean Daniel Pasche, President of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH, highlighted that Switzerland exported watches worth 13 billion Swiss francs (US$14.58 billion) in the first half of this year. Exports of electronic watches surged 18.8% year on year while mechanical watch exports showed an 11% growth. The global appeal of Swiss watches led to increased exports to several countries and regions during the first half of this year, including the United States (+9.9%), Mainland China (+25.4%), Hong Kong (+28.8%), Japan (+5.9%), and the United Kingdom (+7.8%).

Guillaume Adam, General Secretary of the France Horlogerie, said that in 2021 France emerged as the world's fifth-largest exporter of watches and the fourth-largest exporter of watch components and straps. Based on the most recent export data, watch exports from France rose 17% between June last year and May this year, with a 21% increase in watch exports and a 4% rise in the exports of components and straps.

Dae-Boong Kim, Executive Director of the Korea Watch & Clock Industry Cooperative, observed that the consumption of watches and clocks in Korea displayed divergent trends. Consumption of high-end and luxury brand watches continued to rise as the local economy and living standards improved. In 2022, Korea's affluent population spent more than US$16.8 billion on high-end, branded watches, highlighting the country's market and demand for these products.

Industry experts examine industry trends and market outlook

The Asian Watch Conference on 6 September was themed Shaping the Future of Watch: The Next Design Trends. The event featured Anna Dai, Research Analyst of Euromonitor International (Hong Kong), who shared insights on how sustainability was shaping the future of watchmaking. She elaborated on how global brands were integrating ESG (environmental, social, and governance) principles into every facet of their watch manufacturing processes, starting from design to the sourcing of materials. The event also welcomed Zhang Jianmin, Founder & President of Shenzhen CIGA Design Co., Ltd., who provided an account of the success achieved by his domestically established watch brand. He highlighted the journey of Mainland Chinese watches advancing from their origins in Shenzhen to gaining global recognition and prominent in Geneva. His discussion emphasised how Mainland watches had improved in various aspects, including design, production and sales. Independent Swiss watchmaker Ollivier Savelli discussed innovative design concepts and development directions embraced by independent Swiss wristwatches, introducing fresh inspiration and ideas to the world of watch design.

Watch and clock industry outlook improves

The globally renowned Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair has consistently served as an effective platform for the industry to secure orders and establish business connections. Sophia Chong, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, said: "Last year, Hong Kong's total export value of watches and clocks reached almost HK$54.8 billion (US$7 billion). From January to July this year, the export value amounted to HK$31.62 billion. Meanwhile, Hong Kong remains the world's largest wristwatch import market and the second-largest wristwatch export market, following Switzerland. The watch and clock export index has risen from 47.5 in the first quarter to 48.8 in the second quarter, indicating improved sentiment among Hong Kong's watch and clock exporters.

Sophia added that the HKTDC has been committed to bringing new elements to the fairs. Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair exhibits are more diversified this year to serve changing industry needs. This year also welcomes a first-time exhibitor from Greece and Dubai, and will feature Guangdong, Guangzhou and Taiwan pavilions, hoping to create business opportunities for the industry."

Salon de TE, dedicated to showcasing internationally renowned watch brands, will feature five thematic zones: World Brand Piazza, Chic & Trendy, Craft Treasure, Renaissance Moment, and Wearable Tech. These zones will present more than 130 prominent watch brands and designer collections from France, Switzerland, Italy, the United States and more.

The watch features a dial with a retractable pointer indicating both hours and minutes, while the back depicts the starry night sky over Beijing, with "Beijing starry sky" engraved. Another watchmaker Wei Guang Wen will showcase Guangzhou clocks, a timepiece of historical, cultural and artistic value.
