Open Group champion of the 39th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition: "Geisha"

The HKTDC, the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd and the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd co-organised this year's Hong Kong International Watch Forum, inviting watch association representatives from Mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Switzerland to discuss trade performance in their respective regions.

In advance of the fairs, the Hong Kong International Watch Forum was held yesterday (5 September) to help industry professionals grasp global trends and prospects. The forum invited watch association representatives from Mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Switzerland to discuss trade performance in their respective regions and offer perspectives on the global watchmaking industry.

Hong Kong Watch & Clock Competition uncovers design talents

The 39th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Competition aims to promote innovation in the local watch and clock industry, at the same time revealing local design talents and injecting new impetus into the industry. This year's competition was again divided into the Open Group and the Student Group, with the respective themes of "Night" and "Race Against Time". Nearly 70 high-quality entries were received, with a judging panel of nine industry leaders and celebrities selecting winners.

The Open Group champion was won by the Ballerina Watch Company Limited design "Geisha". The charcoal-coloured watch case features a sake glass and a geisha silhouette dial face handmade in sterling silver. Time is subtly shown in the middle of the geisha's fan, while traditional kimono patterns are printed on the back of the strap to echo the geisha design on the surface. First runner-up in the Open Group was clinched by Tam Kwok-tung for "StarTrack". Set against a backdrop of the night sky, the design features an "8" shape with stars telling the time at the top and an automatic winding rotor at the bottom. It is as if the complex mechanical movement of the rotor gives the stars a gravitational pull to guide it to tell the time. Meanwhile, the second runner-up spot went to Heromex Holdings Company Limited for its design "NOCTUS". Featuring a little field mouse as the hour hand and an owl as the minute hand, the two characters tell the fable of the forest as they revolve around the dial.

In the Student Group, Yip Tsz-yan of SHAPE (DILWL) was declared champion for her design "Present". Taking inspiration from a camera lens, the watch features a case with a mechanical design that can be opened and closed manually. Its strap is designed without a clasp and cleverly uses the elasticity of the metal to open and shut. First runner-up was Cheung Ning-yi of the Hong Kong Design Institute, whose design empowers the wearer to be the goddess in charge of her own time. Lee Kwan-ho of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University clinched the second runner-up spot with "The Moment", whose design embodies the message: "The preciousness of time is that people learn to cherish it".

Visitors will be able to appreciate the winners' works and vote for the "Most Popular Award". The awards presentation ceremony will be held on Saturday 10 September, 4pm at the Time Chamber in Hall 1 of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

Forum offers perspectives on the global watchmaking industry

Representatives from various regions share details of the trade performance in their respective regions and offer perspectives on the global watchmaking industry at the Hong Kong International Watch Forum was held yesterday (5 September) to help industry professionals grasp the latest global trends and prospects.

Mainland China watch market trends higher since June

Citing statistics from 270 watch and clock enterprises in Mainland China, Zhang Hong-guang, Director General of the China Horologe Association, said the industry's cumulative operating income in the first half of this year reached Rmb13.73 billion – a slight drop of 2.7% from the previous year. Operating income in April fell 13.1% year on year as a result of COVID-19 pandemic controls. During the first half, the industry recorded a loss of Rmb170 million, a decrease of 31.2% compared to the same period last year. The industry's profits dropped 15.2% to Rmb450 million in the first half of 2022.

Mr Zhang said the mainland's cumulative watch and clock exports showed an overall upward trend between January and July. Cumulative exports reached US$2.68 billion, up 12.1% year on year. With the exception of February, exports showed a month-on-month increase, indicating a positive outlook overall. Imports, however, showed a general downward trend. From January to July, cumulative imports were down 24.8% on the same period last year at US$2.51 billion.

He concluded that the performance of the mainland's watch and clock industry remained steady in comparison with last year, with a 22% reduction in losses and a slight decrease in revenue from the main businesses. With the consumer market recovering gradually since June, the industry's productivity and sales have shown a significant improvement, with an uptick in profitability, indicating the market is picking up.

Japanese watch exports boosted by demand for high-priced mechanical watches

The watch and clock industry in Japan is primarily driven by exports, particularly of watches. In the first half of this year, the industry saw a remarkable recovery, with growth almost returning to the 2019 pre-pandemic level. Citing statistics from association members, Mari Yamazaki, General Manager of the Japan Clock and Watch Association, said Japan's domestic watch sales volume fell 3% year on year with the biggest decline in the digital quartz watches and mechanical watches.

The results were mainly attributable to decreased demand from tourists as a result of Japan's stringent anti-pandemic entry restrictions. Despite the drop in sales quantity, overall sales rose 2% year on year as watch values rose. Sales of high-priced mechanical watches grew 34% year on year due to increased demand. Ms Yamazaki added that as various countries gradually eased their anti-pandemic restrictions, Japan's watch exports rose 13% in quantity and 20% in value year on year, fuelled primarily by the North American market. Thanks to the satisfactory export performance, Japan's overall watch sales increased 12% in value and 13% in quantity year on year in the first half of 2022.

In terms of clocks, while the domestic sales volume and value in Japan fell nearly 10% year on year during this period, global exports rose 8% in quantity and a remarkable 68% in value thanks to the economic recovery in overseas markets. Ms Yamazaki said overall clock quantity sold fell by 9% year on year but total sales increased 1% to 8.5 billion yen, with a downward year on year trend. This was due to weak domestic consumption in Japan.

Swiss watch exports surpass 11bn Swiss francs for first time

Global Swiss watch exports enjoyed a strong performance in the first half, led by precious-metal or steel mechanical watches. According to Thierry Dubois, Managing Director, APAC, Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH, the downturn driven by macroeconomic and geopolitical issues as well as the pandemic had a limited impact on Switzerland's watch sector.

In the first six months, Swiss watch exports grew 11.9% year on year to more than 11 billion Swiss francs (US$11.23 billion). The export quantity rose to 7.2 million units, up 3% year on year. Quartz watches recorded the most noticeable growth, followed by mechanical watches, with the performance of watches priced at more than 3,000 Swiss francs showing the greatest strength. Mr Dubois noted that although Swiss watch exports had previously been sluggish, the performance had improved since last year.

He added that Asia accounted for nearly half (49%) of Swiss watch exports in the first half of this year, with Europe (30%) and the United States (19%) being the second- and third-largest markets respectively. Most markets showed clear growth in demand. The US (+31.4%) led the way, followed by France (+36.5%), the United Kingdom (+31.8%), Germany (+25.4%), Singapore (21.4%) and Japan (+19.5%). However, the market in Mainland China was significantly disrupted by anti-pandemic measures in April and May, resulting in a drop in sales (-26.3%) during the first half of this year. Hong Kong also recorded a drop (-11.5%) during this period.

Mr Dubois concluded that prospects for the Swiss watch industry remained optimistic this year, despite uncertainties in macroeconomic prospects. He predicted watches will continue to benefit from sustained demand and the appeal of luxury goods. However, challenges such as raw-material supply, rising energy and transport costs, and manpower shortages will have an impact on turnover.

The Hong Kong International Watch Forum was held as a webinar on 5 September. A recording of the full event is available on the fair websites.

Sophia Chong, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, said: "Hong Kong's total exports of watches and clocks were valued at HK$32.1 billion from January to July this year. The export index for timepieces rose to 34.6 in the second quarter from 19.7 in the first quarter of 2022, indicating that watch exporters are becoming more optimistic regarding the industry outlook. Top-tier watches featured at World Brand Piazza

Salon de TE will once again feature a series of top-tier international brands and designer collections. Sponsored by Prince Jewellery & Watch for the 12th consecutive year, World Brand Piazza will present 12 renowned international brands, including Blancpain, Breguet, Chopard, Corum, CVSTOS, Franck Muller, Glashutte Original, Hublot, Jacob & Co, Parmigiani Fleurier, Piaget and Sarcar Geneve.

Swiss brand Hublot has once again collaborated with the Sang Bleu tattoo studio founded by well-known Swiss tattoo artist Maxime Plescia-Buchi to launch the Big Bang Sang Bleu II Limited Edition watch. With its criss-cross geometric lines, the watch features the colours of Maxime's tattoos. Set with 220 diamonds, the watch is priced at HK$523,500.

Another Swiss brand, Jacob & Co, collaborated with French sports car brand Bugatti to launch the Jacob & Co X Bugatti Chiron tourbillon watch. Taking one year to research, the team combined 578 parts to build up the movement of the watch, which simulates the operation of a sports car engine and vibrates up and down in the case, creating a stunning visual impact. The unique watch is priced at HK$3.2 million.

Watches tailor-made for Olympic and Paralympic gold medallists showcased

Highlighting quality watches in a multitude of designs, Salon de TE will comprise various thematic zones including Craft Treasure, Chic & Trendy and Renaissance Moment. The Craft Treasure zone will feature high-end mechanical watches and jewellery watches built with superb craftmanship. They include four tourbillon watches tailor-made by ANPASSA for four outstanding athletes including Yang Qian, gold medallist in the women's 10-metre air rifle event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and Wang Yifu, known as the "Godfather of Chinese Shooting" and a gold medallist in the men's 10-metre air rifle event at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 and Athens in 2004.

The tourbillon watch specially made for Yang Qian is embossed with the words "Olympic 2020" and the 10-metre air rifle pattern, with her signature displayed on the bottom plate of the movement. The outer ring of the watch is made from 18K white gold, inlaid with natural diamonds. The four ANPASSA timepieces will be publicly unveiled at the fairs for visitors to appreciate.

Memorigin, another renowned brand from the Craft Treasure zone, will also present a tailored tourbillon watch – the "So Wa Wai Series", created for So Wa-wai, the track-and-field athlete who garnered six Paralympic gold medals, and his mother. "The Champion" watch features the moment of victory for Mr So, with the thin lines on the dial forming the running tracks. A silhouette shows the athlete raising his arm in an iconic No.1 gesture as he reaches the finishing line, while his index finger points to the star at the watch's 12 o'clock position. The "Heroic Mom" watch, meanwhile, depicts a silhouette of the athlete's mother holding the baby So Wa-wai, up in the air, paying tribute to all mothers.

The same brand will also present the "Twilight" tourbillon watch – the inspiration for its design coming from the sun appearing on the horizon as it rises at the break of day.

The Chic & Trendy zone highlights a series of fashionable watch brands, including the "18K Gold LuminFusion Carbon Gold" watch from Swiss brand ROMAGO. This self-winding watch features an 18K gold foil carbon fibre case, with the case and bezel emitting a golden glow in the dark.

HONG KONG, Aug 3, 2022 – (ACN Newswire) – Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 38th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, the 8th HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show and the inaugural Simply Shopping Fest have all concluded successfully. The three public shows attracted more than 80,000 visitors appreciating and purchasing fine jewellery pieces, in addition to buying gourmet food and wine and household items. The concurrent events featured livestreaming sessions hosted by key opinion leaders (KOLs), offering more opportunities for exhibitors to showcase their products as well as creating a more engaging experience – covering shopping, leisure and entertainment – for the general public. The broadcasts received an enthusiastic response.

Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 38th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and 8th HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show concluded successfully yesterday.

The two jewellery shows featured jewellery parades that showcased elegant and stylish pieces.

The smart jewellery bidding session was well received with visitors participating enthusiastically in bidding for their desired pieces.

HKTDC Acting Executive Director Sophia Chong said: "The two jewellery shows were open to the public this year, bringing local retail opportunities for exhibitors. We promoted an online-to-offline (O2O) shopping model through the KOL livestreaming sessions, with engaging sales techniques helping exhibitors to further promote their products. Following the encouraging feedback received, we will continue reinforcing cross-channel marketing to help exhibitors increase brand awareness, reach out to a wider customer base and grow their business."

Jewellery exhibitors acquiring new customers

J Ocean Pearl Jewellery Limited Director Jackie Leung and Marketing Director Lila Wong said their sales at the Jewellery Show were satisfactory, helped by using social media promotions to further extend their reach to new customer segments. "The KOL livestreaming session at our booth was an interesting way to interact with viewers, opening up new business opportunities and attracting more customers," they said.

Yvonne Pong, Director of Wing Hang South Sea Pearl Company Limited, shared that a new customer purchased a golden pearl necklace priced at more than HK$200,000. "Our sales have been encouraging. The shows attract many quality consumers with strong purchasing power," Ms Pong said.

Another exhibitor, Jignesh Donda, Director, Sheetal (Far East) Limited, said: "We showcased a variety of exquisite diamonds at the show, primarily focused on 0.30 to 0.50 carat diamonds, to cater to the preferences of local customers. The new Exhibition Centre MTR station makes it more convenient for exhibitors and visitors to get to the fairground. We've received a number of enquiries from customers and believe we will meet more new customers here."

Talented local jewellery designers gathered at the shows

As one of the highlight events this year, the 23rd Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition continues to provide a platform for local talents to showcase their creative flair and to identify budding designers. The winning pieces were displayed at the twin jewellery shows.

The shows also provided a precious opportunity for young designers to interact with the public, while showcasing their creative talents and jewellery designs.

Fanny Yu, Group Project Director of Loupe, noted: "Loupe is a design incubation space founded by Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group to nurture Hong Kong's young talents in jewellery-making and design. This is the first time we have participated in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show. Around 20 young jewellery designers are with us here. Through this opportunity, they have acquired a deeper understanding of local consumers' needs. This will definitely help their career development."

The HKTDC surveyed more than 1,000 exhibitors and visitors during the twin jewellery shows. The results showed that the most popular purchases were diamond jewellery, followed by gemstone jewellery and jade jewellery. Close to 40% of surveyed visitors said they had spent at least HK$1,000 more at the fairs in anticipation of a new round of consumption vouchers by the government. Around 33% of visitors said they had spent more than HK$10,000 at the jewellery shows.

Food and health products top sellers at Simply Shopping Fest

The debut Simply Shopping Fest showed its effectiveness as a channel for exhibitors to sell products to the general public. HKTDC's survey conducted at Simply Shopping Fest reflected that gourmet food and wine were the most purchased types of product, followed by home and living goods and health and beauty items. Survey respondents said that product variety, product price and discount offers were the most attractive aspects of the shopping fair.

Gary Ching, Founder & Watchmaker, Anpassa Watch Company, Hong Kong said: "We are participating in the debut Simply Shopping Fest to let more people know about our local brand "Anpassa" along with our customised and personalised watchmaking service. We estimate that on-site sales will be around HK$100,000. Benefitting from the Government's Convention and Exhibition Industry Subsidy Scheme, SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) from different sectors are able to participate in this fair at discounted exhibition fees, bringing a greater variety of products to consumers."

Livestreaming generated more business opportunities for exhibitors

The HKTDC collaborated with livestreaming platforms to present multiple livestreaming sessions at the three events, helmed by KOLs who promoted exhibitors' products and interacted with the audience.

Exhibitor Kenneth Au, Co-founder and Director at Life Is For Excellence Limited, said: "The KOLs explain the features of our healthy foods to customers in an interactive and persuasive way. Customers buy our products via the livestreaming platform and pick them up at the fairground. This O2O shopping model has helped us increase our exposure, enrich our customers' experience and generate more sales turnover." Meanwhile, Jackel Lee, Owner of Nubiotic International (HK) Limited, said orders generated from the livestreaming sessions accounted for 10% of the company's turnover at the fair.

Numerous exciting events were held during the three fairs, including smart bidding sessions where shoppers bid on popular items starting at 10% of the retail price. Other well-received events organised at the jewellery shows include Jewellery Parade Series, Tahitian Pearl Stylish Bracelet Workshop and Handmade Rose Earrings Workshop as well as sharing sessions on "Diamond, Arts and Science" and "Making Unique Jewellery: The Tradition and Future of Craftsmanship".

At the Simply Shopping Fest, events such as the Hong Kong Tasting Trendies Sake Awards 2022, Cooking with Chef Kitty, Oppa's Cuisine – Food and Wine Pairing, Chinese calligraphy appreciation, Chinese medicine and ketogenic diet sharing sessions were popular among visitors.

Food Expo and three concurrent shows coming up in mid-August

Following on the heels of these three exhibitions, the HKTDC will organise a series of public fairs in the summer, including the Food Expo, Beauty & Wellness Expo and Home Delights Expo (all 11 to 15 August), and the Hong Kong International Tea Fair (11 to 13 August). These events will provide the public with a unique one-stop shopping experience, while helping companies expand their local retail market and provide a boost to Hong Kong's economy.

Three Best of Show awards were given in the Open Group. Yuen Ching-chi claimed a Best of Show award for the second consecutive year. Her 2022 entry, "The Dream of Butterfly", in black and white tones, portrays butterflies that dream of dancing freely in the snow and the transformations they must go through to survive periods of severe weather. Ms Yuen's design sends a message that everyone can still carry their dreams and fly high under adversity.

Another Best of Show award went to Hui Yuk-king's multipurpose ring, "Where Dreams Lie". Her design is adorned with more than 900 coloured sapphires in 100 different shades, totalling more than 20 carats, all handpicked by the designer herself. It took more than 500 hours to create this delicate and colourful ring that depicts the origin of dreams and explores our imaginations.

"Flying" by Yung Yuk-shan is the third piece given the Best of Show award. The pendant/brooch depicts an astronaut being lifted into the air by a bunch of handheld, planet-shaped balloons. Inspiration came from the designer's childhood dream of going on space adventures as well as the sense of pride she felt when a Chinese female astronaut went into space.

Student Group unleashes boundless potential

Open to students of institutions registered in Hong Kong, the Student Group category of the competition aims to inspire more young design talents to join the jewellery design profession. This year, VTC Youth College student Stephanie Law's entry, "The Unicorn in My Dream – RUNNING", won both the Champion title and the Craftsmanship and Technology Award. The ring is embellished with sapphires and a droplet tourmaline mounted in 18-karat white gold and yellow gold. The unicorn's wings show an enamelled gradation, from red to violet, that adds a hint of fantasy, while the surrounding whirlwind feature can be spun around.

The second runner-up spot went to Alison Yip who is studying on a programme co-offered by the School for Higher and Professional Education and Sheffield Hallam University. Her bangle design, "Fountain of Utopia", is a visualisation of the designer's ideal world. She imagines there is a goddess who bestows spring water that can cure people's pain and forgive their sins, helping to create a utopia.

This year, two second runner-up awardees were selected from a plethora of impressive entries. Cannis Pang from the Hong Kong Design Institute created "Wonderland", a ring designed as a dreamy flower with a swirling shape. Glass beads of different sizes resemble short-lived bubbles in a dream-like atmosphere. Lam Wai-yee, a repeat winner from the School of Continuing Education at Hong Kong Baptist University, designed "The Interlock", a bangle that locks "dreams" and "ambitions" together, conveying a determination to pursue one's goals.

Nearly 120 entries were submitted for this year's Jewellery Design Competition. The seven-strong judging panel evaluated the entries based on creativity and innovation, aesthetics, craftsmanship and wearability, topic relevance and marketability (the latter applicable only to the Open Group).

This year, the newly added "Popularity Award" went to Hui Yuk-king's entry "Where Dreams Lie". It was voted for by visitors on the first day of the twin jewellery shows out of all the winning pieces.

Sophia Chong (L), Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, and Lawrence Ma (R), Chairman, HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show Fair Organising Committee, attended today's press conference to introduce the twin jewellery shows and the HKTDC Simply Shopping Fest.

Pictured at the press conference today are Sophia Chong, Lawrence Ma and members of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show Fair Organising Committee.

430+ global exhibitors participate in twin jewellery shows

This year's twin jewellery shows have attracted more than 430 exhibitors. In addition to local jewellery companies, exhibitors from Mainland China, Germany, Italy, Japan and Singapore are taking part in the event, including the Italian pavilion that comprises some 20 exhibitors. In addition, the Asia Pacific Creator Association will present innovative jewellery creations from a number of Hong Kong designers.

Sophia Chong, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: "Many exhibitors taking part in the jewellery shows have continued to explore opportunities in the retail market during the pandemic, while local consumers crave for jewellery pieces with unique designs and attractive pricing. That's why we have fully opened this year's shows to public visitors. At the same time, Simply Shopping Fest will feature six exhibit zones with more than 540 exhibitors showcasing products from Taiwan, Japan, Australia and France, along with other countries and regions. The government will soon issue the second phase of the Consumption Voucher Scheme (CVS), which will stimulate the local public to embark on a new wave of spending. In addition, the opening of the MTR Exhibition Centre Station will provide greater convenience for many, elevating the entire shopping experience at the three fairs."

Jewellery industry further explores local market and online business

Helped by the stabilisation of the local pandemic situation in April and May and the first phase of the CVS by the government, Hong Kong's total retail sales rose in value by 4.7% year on year in April and May. It is expected that the second phase of the CVS and other government measures will continue to stimulate the local jewellery retail market. Lawrence Ma, Chairman of the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show Fair Organising Committee, pointed out that the continuation of the pandemic combined with increased geopolitical and global economic uncertainty have led many in the jewellery industry to shift their focus to the local market in addition to online opportunities. "More and more jewellery retailers are looking to expand their online sales business and promote their brands and products to the target consumer market through livestreaming and social media promotion," Mr Ma said.

Exquisite jewellery pieces make their Hong Kong debut

This year's Hong Kong International Jewellery Show consists of five highlighted zones, including "World of Glamour", which showcases the artistry and world-renowned expertise of Hong Kong's fine jewellery sector and has attracted many well-known local jewellery companies to participate. "Fine Jewellery", meanwhile, showcases a wide variety of fine jewellery from around the world. Featured products in the two fair spotlights include:

Inspired by the masterpieces of impressionist painter Claude Monet, Zuri combines natural-colour diamonds gifted by nature with modern jewellery design, presenting a feast of flower-shaped high-end jewellery that people will adore.

– The "Spring Miracle.Bee" collection 18K White Gold Diamond Earrings from Dai Sun Jewellery Company Limited (Booth 3G-A10) highlight the beauty of nature in the design.

– Jadeite Cabochon and Diamond Earrings from On Tung Company (Booth 3E-F02), beset by hexagon-shaped, kite-shaped, and oval-cut diamonds with a classic and timeless jadeite design.

– A variety of wedding jewellery, including the 18K Yellow & White Gold Diamond with Natural Golden South Sea Pearl Necklace and Brooch from Wing Hang South Sea Pearl Company Limited (Booth 3E-C16) and the Calla Lily Pure Gold Collection from Just Gold Company (Booth 3E-D02).

Other fair highlights include "Antique & Vintage Jewellery", which presents a variety of magnificent antique jewellery showcasing timeless craftsmanship and charm; "Silver and Finished Jewellery", which showcases vibrant and fashionable jewellery collections; and "Tools & Equipment and Packaging" where a broad array of jewellery tools and packaging items will be showcased.

Materials for making unique jewellery items

The main focus of the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show is on quality jewellery materials. Many exhibitors will feature loose diamonds in various cuttings along with coloured gemstones and pearls from different origins. Visitors can choose their favourite diamonds, gemstones and other jewellery materials, and then match with different accessories to design and make their own unique jewellery items. Featured products in the show include:

– Pink Morganite from RMC Gems Limited (Booth 3F-F04), with a magnificent pear-shaped cut. This is another member of the beryl family of gems coming in various hues of pink and resembling a pink diamond.
– A uniquely shaped diamond ring with two precious gemstones from Dynamic International (Booth 3D-B02). The two gemstones are a purplish-red Sri Lankan ruby and a vivid bluish-green Zambian emerald, both displaying a checkerboard cut.
– An elegant South Sea Pearl String from J Ocean Pearl Jewellery Limited (Booth 3G-E12).

Bid on favourite jewellery items with discounts of up to 90%

Since this year's shows are fully open to jewellery enthusiasts, sharing sessions are being organised to help enhance the public's jewellery knowledge. Topics will include "Diamond, Arts and Science", "The Creation and Appreciation of Jewellery", "The Tradition and Future of Craftsmanship" and "Why Choose Sustainable Pearls" along with the "Handmade Rose Earrings Workshop". Jewellery Smart Bidding will also take place, with auction items including an 18K colour diamond earrings and ring collection and an 18K South Sea white pearl and diamond pendant. Visitors can bid for their favourite products starting at 10% of the original retail price. Numerous jewellery parades and lucky draws will also be held during the exhibition. Visitors who spend more than HK$1,000 in a single receipt can redeem a lucky draw coupon, with fabulous prizes such as gold tiger ornaments and a Bijoumontre Petit Series wrist watch on offer.

In addition, the award ceremony for the 23rd Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition Award will be held on the first day of the show to encourage and reward local jewellery design talents. The winning designs will be displayed in the south lobby of Hall 3FG during the show.

For security reasons, all visitors to the two jewellery shows are required to present proof of identity for registration. Those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or above for registration and admission.

Strong Mainland China demand boosts Swiss watch industry

HONG KONG, Sep 7, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades and Industries, the special edition of the 40th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and the ninth Salon de TE begin tomorrow at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. To help industry participants grasp the latest market information and trends and formulate strategies for post-pandemic growth, the three organisations hosted the Hong Kong International Watch Forum on 30 August. The forum invited watch association representatives from Mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Switzerland to share on the watch industry's current trade performance in the region and offer perspectives that can help the global watchmaking industry continue to move forward.

The "Global Luxury Watch Investment and Market Outlook in Mainland China" forum on 10 September will feature insights from John Ng, Horologer of Montres S.A.

Swiss representative – US demand has also rebounded

Even though the pandemic has battered the global economy and posed significant challenges for the watch and clock industry, the speakers' view was that markets are steadily recovering. They noted that imports, exports, production volumes and profits have all rebounded from the depths of 2020, although still remain shy of 2019 levels.

Thierry Dubois, the representative from Switzerland's Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH, explained that Swiss watch exports during the first six months of 2021 have improved year-on-year. In 2020, the country's total exports dropped 21.7% compared to the previous year. However, the total export value remained on a par with that of 2019, dipping only 0.5% to 10.6 billion Swiss francs. This was thanks to the Mainland China market, which has seen a surge in demand for luxury Swiss watches since last summer. Demand from the US also began picking up from March this year, which was sooner than the Swiss watch industry anticipated.

Mr Dubois pointed out that Asia now represents the largest market overall for Swiss watch exports, with Mainland China being the leading market, followed by the US, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. He foresees that by 2025, the mainland's consumption will pull further ahead and account for 46-48% of all luxury watch purchases.

He added that the pandemic has created new consumer habits, with prolonged lockdowns giving consumers more time to reflect on their watch purchases and make new discoveries. "We have observed that online sales quickly replaced physical sales, as shops had to close during the lockdowns. In 2019, online sales represented 10-15% of total sales of luxury products. We expect this will rise to 30% by 2025. At the same time, the importance of social media for communication, interaction and sales has continued to grow. Livestreaming has exploded, and the trend is particularly visible in Asia. With the increase in e-commerce, the demand for efficient logistics and delivery has also climbed, because today's online shoppers expect swift product deliveries once they have placed an order," said Mr Dubois. He remarked that there has also been a notable increase in the demand for "pre-owned" watches – or watches that have been possessed by someone else – which is expected to rise by 15-20% within four years.

German representative – physical stores remain attractive

Guido Grohmann, the representative from Germany's Federal Associations of Jewellery, Watches, Silverware and Supplying Industry e.V. (BVSU), said the country's exports of watches, clocks and parts saw a significant year-on-year decline of 14.1% in 2020, including falls of 7.5% in the European Union (EU) and 16.4% in Asia. The situation was largely echoed in imports. In 2020, German imports of watches, clocks and parts fell 6.2% compared to the previous year, with the biggest decline registered in Asia, at 8.7%. Despite this, imports from the EU rose 28.5%, with logistics operating more smoothly among EU countries. In 2021, both exports and imports continued to strengthen during the first five months with imports faring even better than the same period in 2019.

While e-commerce continues to gain popularity, Mr Grohmann said that offline stores are still maintaining their attractiveness. He remarked that even though lower-priced products were sold online during the pandemic, consumers still preferred going to stores to buy high-end products as it allows them to try out the luxury goods. As for logistics, he noted, "The COVID crisis has reflected that we still have huge problems within the supply chain, especially in shipping parts. Industries are looking into reinventing local suppliers in Europe to attain a more secure supply chain. It would be much better if the world's governments [could] focus on how to re-enact the fast and solid supply chain that we used to have. From the watch industry's perspective, we have to discuss this on a global level. It is difficult, but it can be solved."

The Hong Kong International Watch Forum was held as a webinar on 6 September. A replay will soon be available on the Watch & Clock Fair website.

Hong Kong Watch & Clock Competition identifies local design talent

To raise the design standards of the Hong Kong watch industry, nurture local designers and inject new impetus into the industry, the HKTDC collaborated with the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd to organise the 38th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Competition. This year's competition was once again divided into the Open Group and the Student Group, adopting the themes of "Minimalism" and "Live Fully" respectively. About 90 high-quality entries were received, from which a panel of 10 judges from various sectors selected the winning entries.

The results of the competition have been announced and the champion in the Open Group was Tam Kwok-tung for his design titled "SPACE_BAR". Housed in a transparent container, the design beautifully encapsulates the simplicity of the watch's movements. The first runner-up prize was claimed by the Ballerina Watch Company Limited and its design "Singing Bowl". The design forgoes a traditional watch crown to accentuate the unified and symmetrical watch case design. Second runner-up was Wong Ting-bong for his design "D012". The unique open design of the minute dial is topped with a linear second hand, which perfectly represents the concept of points, lines and surfaces as the hands move.

In the Student Group, the Hong Kong Design Institute's Yip Tsz-yan was crowned champion for her design "Insight". Her watch's bezel and glass are made with a diamond-cut design, and the case-back contains fancy glass that refracts light and reflects colours. Ho See-long from the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong claimed first runner-up with her design titled "Serendipity". The design reflects the idea that the happiness and fortune people seek may already be surrounding them and that every trivial matter in daily life can be a miracle. The second runner-up prize was taken by another Hong Kong Design Institute student, Pui Hong-yiu, whose design "Expedition" drew inspiration from the film Around the World in 80 Days. The watch's oversized design symbolises the confidence and motivation for taking an expedition, while the mini globes on the face can display the wearer's location.

The champions of the Open Group and Student Group will be sponsored to attend the INHORGENTA MUNICH 2022 trade fair in Germany. All the winning and finalist entries will also be displayed during the Watch & Clock Fair to showcase Hong Kong's design prowess to global industry participants and the general public.

Renowned watchmaker shares tips on luxury watch investment in Mainland China

In addition to the above events, the annual Asian Watch Conference will be held on 9 September during the Watch & Clock Fair. With the theme, "Redesigning the Future of Luxury Watches", experts will look at the future for the luxury watch sector from the perspective of product design trends and marketing strategies, helping watchmakers and manufacturers to be more future-ready. Trade professionals interested in attending the conference can register at the event website. https://tinyurl.com/crnrkc2r

Meanwhile, a sharing session titled "Global Luxury Watch Investment and Market Outlook in Mainland China" will be held on the afternoon of 10 September. John Ng, Horologer of Montres S.A., who is known as the only Asian disciple of master watchmaker Philippe Dufour, will be joined by Ho Sai-chu, Chairman of Chih Lo Lou Art Promotion (Non-Profit Making) Ltd, as well as three auction house representatives: Cissy Ngan, Associate Vice President and Specialist at Christie's, Mary Lee, Consultant at Sotheby's and Jill Chen, Head of Watches, Hong Kong at Phillips. They will discuss global luxury watch investment and share insights on watch collecting, the prospects for watch investment in Mainland China, the role of young people in the watch industry, and the industry's outlook in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Interested trade professionals can register here. https://tinyurl.com/crnrkc2r

The 40th HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and the ninth Salon de TE both begin tomorrow. The physical fairs will run from 8 to 12 September at the HKCEC, while the online version will run until 19 September. The hybrid format will help global watch traders explore more business opportunities. Industry participants are also invited to join a series of forums and seminars that will provide first-hand market information and insights into the latest business trends. The Hong Kong International Watch Forum will be broadcast online on 6 September, featuring sharing from representatives of watch associations from Mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Switzerland. Design competition to promote local creativity

To raise design standards for the Hong Kong watch industry and nurture budding local designers, the HKTDC has joined together with the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd to jointly-organise the 38th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Competition. This year's competition was divided into two categories – the Open Group and Student Group – under the respective themes of "Minimalism" and "Live Fully". The creations of the competition winners and finalists will be on display throughout the Watch & Clock Fair to showcase the best of Hong Kong's creativity to visitors.

Organised by the HKTDC, CENTRESTAGE, Asia's premier fashion event will be held from 10 to 12 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), featuring designer brands from around the world.
