Eight tips for choosing a domain name for your small business

SINGAPORE, Mar 15, 2024 – (ACN Newswire) – Choosing a domain name for a small business requires careful consideration, as it is often the first thing people see about your business. The domain name of a business is often considered a piece of real estate on the internet, or your business home on the web. It is core to the digital presence of your business.

GoDaddy shares eight tips to help select a domain name that is right for your business and can serve you for years to come.

1. Keep it simple

The first rule of choosing a domain name is to keep it simple. If your domain name has an unusual spelling or is difficult to type, chances are people could mis-spell your domain name and not find you on the internet. Use proper spellings for words, instead for example of using ‘u’ for ‘you’ or ‘c’ for ‘see’.  If you have to explain how to spell your domain name, then it might be too confusing.

2. Shorter is better

Consider aiming for six to fourteen characters to the left of the dot. The fewer characters your domain name has, the easier it will be to type, say and share. There is also less risk of losing visitors who might mistype or misspell it.

This also allows more of the URL address to show up in search engine list results, which can help customers quickly find your website.

3. Add keywords to your domain name

Using keywords that describe your business and the products or services you offer can make it easier to recognize the nature of your business.

For example, if you run a specialized cake business, you might want to register a domain name with the words “specialized” and “cakes” in it, depending on your business name. Try to Include keywords that people might enter when searching for your product or service can help improve your search engine results.

4. Mention your location

You may want to consider including your location in your domain name, by choosing a domain name extension for your location, like a .ph. or a .sg domain name, shows customers that you are a business located in the country.  This can be important for customers who would like to do business with companies located in their country.

Whether you add your location before or after the dot, customers will be able to find you geographically more easily. They will know quickly they are dealing with someone based locally and supporting a local business.

5. Avoid numbers and hyphens

Numbers and hyphens can easily cause confusion. People who heard your domain spoken might not immediately known if you are using a number, or whether the number is spelled out as a word.

Likewise, if you used a hyphen, customers could forget the hyphen and mistype your URL. Or they would remember the hyphen but put it in the wrong place. Either way, the result is the same, a potential customer lost because they could not find your website.

6. Make it unforgettable

With so many businesses online, there is a lot of competition out there. So having a catchy and memorable domain name is essential. An easy-to-remember custom domain name will help to encourage word-of-mouth advertising and help spread your brand faster. If you cannot get your domain name down to one memorable word, you might want to think about joining two words together.

7. Consider all your domain name options

The internet’s been around for decades, but there’s still a strong bias towards choosing a .com domain name extension. So, if you can, you can try and register a .com domain address.

But if the .com domain name you want isn’t available, there are a variety of industry-specific domain extensions available, such as .co, .net, .org.online and .news. There are also extensions that can clearly show the nature of the business such as .photography, .shop, .coffee and .club.

8. Safeguard your brand

To help further protect your brand, consider registering your domain name with various domain extensions, as well as misspelled versions of your domain name, if you think that might be helpful. This can help to prevent competitors from registering different versions of your domain name, and then using them to pull traffic away from your website.

Once you have found the perfect domain name(s) for your business, it is important to check that the name is not trademarked or copyrighted by another company. It can also help to check that the domain name you want is available on social media sites, by checking social media networks to make sure the name is not already taken, and helpful to have the same name across your website and social platforms for consistency.

And finally, be sure to keep your domain names current and registered, as you do not want the registrations to lapse.  Providers, like GoDaddy, offer automatic renewals for domain names to help ensure they do not expire.

Take your time and do it right and your domain name will be a proud representation of your business for many years to come.

Brawijaya Academic develops DAD App to promote safety at Indonesian Rail Crossings

MALANG, E. JAVA, Indonesia, Dec 15, 2023 – (ACN Newswire) – Brawijaya University’s Prof. Sugiono has developed an application to address safety at public railway crossings in Indonesia. The Double Awareness Driving (DAD) App, which can run on both visual and audio maps, has been developed to increase ‘double awareness’ of crossing safety – for drivers of motor vehicles on the one side, and drivers of trains on the other.

Professor of transportation ergonomics major at Brawijaya University, Sugiono, shows the Double Awareness Driving (DAD) application that he created to prevent accidents at railway crossings.

“We want to build awareness in two directions. So far, such a ‘double awareness’ solution, if I may say so, is still partial,” said Prof. Ir. Sugiono, ST., MT., Ph.D., Professor of Transport Ergonomics at Brawijaya’s Industrial Engineering Department.

In the first stage, the DAD App will serve drivers as well as pedestrians at certain railway crossings, especially those without gate barriers. The App works like Google Maps, providing information to travelers on the railway crossings they will encounter from the beginning of their journey until they arrive at their destination.

“For example, the App user will receive optimal route information from point A to point B, along with the railway crossings that he will pass along on the route,” said Sugiono. Based on this information, drivers and pedestrians can remain alert and careful at railway crossings, he said, particularly at rail crossings without gates.

Besides providing information on routes and crossings at the start of a journey, the App processes information in real-time. “500 meters before the crossing, the alert is still green. Then, 500-100 meters approaching the crossing, it will become yellow, and at 100 meters, it will be red and sound an alarm. This increases awareness when crossing,” he said.

In the second stage, the DAD App will not only increase awareness among motorists but will be implemented for train operators as well. “The App’s next stage is intended to improve on the existing solution, which focuses on the crossing area. Train operators have not yet been comprehensively involved,” said Sugiono.

According to the Professor, train operators will benefit from real-time information for the crossings they will pass. Presently, operators rely on orders or signal lights when entering a crossing. “Operators also need information, as they base duties on the signal. With DAD, the operator can make decisions when conditions are dangerous,” he said.

The ultimate goal of the DAD App is to form an Early Warning System. Currently, the University is in the process of patenting the application, which in future will be offered for integration into Google Maps. “If we cooperate with Google Maps, it will be easier as they use satellites, so even without an internet network, our App will be okay,” he said.

In 2022, the number of accidents that occurred at railway crossings reached 289, as many as 6.02 incidents some weeks. Based on Brawijaya’s records, there are 2,259 crossings in Indonesia without crossbars or officers, with as many as 87 percent or 251 accidents occurring at these unmanned crossings. DAD’s efforts are expected to reduce these numbers.

Pertamina NRE presents Indonesia’s EV ecosystem at COP28

DUBAI, Dec 6, 2023 – (ACN Newswire) – With Pertamina NRE involvement in Indonesia’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem development, the adoption of EVs represents a significant opportunity for the company, thereby reinforcing Indonesia’s efforts towards energy transition, the company said at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) on Friday (Dec 1).

Dannif Danusaputro, President Director of Pertamina New Renewable Energy (NRE), a subsidiary of the state-owned oil and gas company, conveyed their commitment to developing the EV ecosystem. “We will play a leading role in the infrastructure, charging stations, and the entire supply chain process for electric vehicles,” he noted during a session themed “E-Mobility: Balancing Sustainability and Growth in Critical Supply Chains” at the Indonesian Pavilion.

Dannif remarked that Pertamina NRE will develop two-wheeled EVs. The company has already collaborated with several ride-hailing companies in Indonesia. This collaboration involves fleet operator development, drivers, and charging infrastructure. The company will also focus on developing battery packs for two-wheeled vehicles.

In November 2023, Pertamina NRE partnered with PT VKTR Mobility Technology Tbk to initiate sustainable mobility solutions. Both companies introduced the Electric Mobility as a Service (e-MaaS) model to support the adoption of EVs for urban public transportation services.

The e-MaaS model offers flexible financing for operating and maintaining EV buses, intending to reduce reliance on government funding, thereby saving costs for deploying environmentally friendly vehicles in major cities. Dannif emphasized that the e-MaaS model also encompasses crucial infrastructure, such as charging stations and renewable energy sources.

During his presentation, Dannif stressed the importance of funding. He highlighted the need for funding to advance EV technology throughout the supply chain. “This is crucial in the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem. With it, a robust and independent electric vehicle supply chain will materialize more quickly,” Dannif stated.

Dannif also underscored another critical aspect: the diverse natural resources distributed across different regions, with connectivity pivotal in providing clean energy. Infrastructure and connectivity will facilitate supply chain distribution, accelerating the realization of the EV ecosystem.

Pertamina NRE’s support for the EV ecosystem aligns with President Joko Widodo’s directive to expedite public transportation electrification, as stipulated in Presidential Regulation 55/2019 and Presidential Instruction 7/2022. Pertamina NRE’s efforts aim to accelerate an environmentally friendly transportation supply chain ecosystem.

Shinta Kamdani, deputy chairperson for maritime affairs, investment and foreign affairs at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that Indonesia holds significant potential in EV development. “Although still in its early stages, Indonesia has immense potential, from utilizing raw materials to battery recycling. The private sector can participate and seize opportunities in developing the electric vehicle supply chain ecosystem,” Shinta stated.

Encouraging the adoption of EVs, the government has implemented various measures to attract consumers, including incentives of Rp7 million for new motorcycles or conversions. On the manufacturing side, there is a 10 percent value-added tax deduction for domestic component levels reaching 40 percent.

Rachmat Kaimuddin, deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, highlighted Indonesia’s active role as a primary EV supplier, not only nationally but also regionally. “Indonesia could become a major player in supplying electric vehicles internationally. This effort can commence with exports to the Southeast Asian region,” Rachmat remarked.

All panelists in the session agreed that utilizing raw materials, such as nickel, presents a significant opportunity for Indonesia. Moreover, collaborative steps are needed to enhance capacity and technology as well as leverage advantages for competitiveness. These efforts will progress smoothly with policy support from the government.

Francois De Maricourt, President Director of PT Bank HSBC Indonesia, and Kwasi Ampofo, Head of Metals and Mining at BloombergNEF, were also present at the session.

Pertamina, as a leading company in energy transition, is committed to supporting Net Zero Emission 2060 targets by unceasingly promoting programs that directly impact the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These efforts align with the Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across Pertamina’s business lines and operations.
