Werner Erhard and Martin Heidegger On Being

CHICAGO, IL / ACCESSWIRE, Jun 18, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – During these challenging times of uncertainty and disruption, we are spending many hours with our attention on what's no longer available to us and what might happen and might not happen. Perhaps for that reason alone, the new book "Speaking Being", has never been more relevant.

"Speaking Being: Werner Erhard, Martin Heidegger, and a New Possibility of Being Human" (Wiley), an Amazon #1 bestseller in Philosophy, is an opportunity to bring our focus to the relatively unexamined world of being.

Professors Bruce Hyde's (PhD) and Drew Kopp's (PhD) highly acclaimed book offers an unprecedented study of the ideas and methods developed by Martin Heidegger, one of the most prominent philosophers of the 20th century, and the ideas of Werner Erhard, the breakthrough thinker who created The Forum program in the 1980s (following his est Training in the 1970s).

Through a comparative side-by-side display and analysis of a transcript of Erhard's Forum, with his ideas and methodology, combined with Heidegger's philosophical ideas, the authors make the power of Erhard's ontological rhetoric and Heidegger's often difficult-for-the-layman ideas available to a wide range of audiences. It brings to life complex yet important new ideas for scholars at work within a variety of academic disciplines, and provides an entry to anyone interested in the possibility of and the access to being for human beings. In accomplishing all of this, what is revealed are new insights into the actual nature of being of human beings, and the opening up of new possibilities for being for human beings.

Jonathan D. Moreno, Professor of Ethics at University of Pennsylvania, said Speaking Being is "powerful, imaginative, frustrating, amusing, threatening, and enlightening – all at the same time. It also has the power to transform your life."

Michael E. Zimmerman, Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado, Boulder stated, "I regard Speaking Being as an enormously important contribution to understanding Heidegger and Erhard. The latter has received far too little serious academic attention, and this book begins to make up for that lack. Moreover, the book's analysis of Heidegger's thought is among the best that I have ever read. I commend this book to all readers without reservation."

Edmodo, Subsidiary of NetDragon, Recommended by UNESCO for Distance Learning

HONG KONG, Mar 19, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – NetDragon Websoft Holdings Limited ("NetDragon" or "the Company", Hong Kong Stock Code: 777), a global leader in building internet communities, is pleased to announce that Edmodo, a subsidiary of NetDragon, was one of the recommended distance learning applications and platforms by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in view of the disruption to education worldwide due to COVID-19. Edmodo is among the world's largest and most active learning communities with over 100 million registered users, covering approximately 400,000 schools in more than 190 countries and regions.

According to UNESCO, 85 countries have announced or implemented suspension of educational institutions, hindering approximately 777 million students' learning progress. UNESCO has updated a "Distance learning solutions" section on its website with a recommendation list attached to promote online learning through distance learning platforms. The recommended applications and platforms tend to have wide reach, a strong user base and evidence of impact. Most of the solutions are free and several support multiple languages.

During the suspension of various primary and secondary schools, NetDragon encourages teachers and students to engage in free online interactive learning through Edmodo for continuous learning progress. Prominent functions of Edmodo have gained popularity among teachers and students. Edmodo can be widely applied across multiple learning use cases, including lesson preparation, lesson delivery, as well as after-class studies and discussions, while providing extensive functions that include assignment distribution, quiz assessment, learning progress monitoring and teaching statistics. Embedded within a comprehensible interface similar to social media platforms, it is handy for teaching and self-learning to be combined and managed on a single platform. On top of that, Edmodo facilitates a swift interaction between teachers, students and parents. By raising or answering questions, sharing reading materials or intriguing videos and initiating discussions between teachers and students, it stimulates students to develop independent learning skills and areas of interest, and therefore, enhances mutual exchange of ideas with teachers. Apart from distance teaching, Edmodo also features remote student supervision, enabling teachers to monitor teaching data and further adjust their teaching tempo accordingly. Parents may also follow their children's learning progress and assist in keeping up with the learning schedule during the school suspension period.

Recently, NetDragon has also partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services in setting up contingency plans and providing free cross-border cloud services to suspended educational institutions in Hong Kong, so that teachers can easily upload and store teaching videos to cloud servers where local and cross-boundary school students can easily access the learning resources. Teachers can further assign homework or learning tasks to students and thus provide at-home learning support.

The recommendation by UNESCO is a recognition of Edmodo's endeavors to online education, as well as its capability in handling situations of different kinds. Edmodo has recorded a substantive increase in new registered users recently, with significant growth in new and active users from Italy and Spain in comparison with the same period last year. NetDragon will continue to utilize Edmodo's powerful strength in online education to provide distance learning support to users in affected countries and regions.

Yidan Prize Conference Series: Europe 2020 Held at Cambridge, with a Focus on Important Global Education Issues

Cambridge, UK, Mar 13, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – Yidan Prize Conference Series: Europe 2020 was held at Jesus College, the University of Cambridge. This year's conference focused on two themes: education and international development; wellbeing and education.

This year's Yidan Prize Conference Series: Europe 2020 honored the achievements of the Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate 2019, Professor Usha Goswami, and also honored the work of the Yidan Prize for Education Development Laureate 2019, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed KCMG. He died in late December 2019. Sir Fazle was the Founder of BRAC, one of the world's largest non-profit development organizations, which currently operates across 11 countries in Africa and Asia and has set up hundreds of early childhood development centers, where close to 40,000 children are presently enrolled.

"The 2019 Laureates represent two very different approaches to ensuring that our children go on to lead happy, productive lives, but they also intersect. Both point to the need to achieve a better, deeper understanding of children's needs. Through their work, we now see promising ways to help millions of lives around the world. With technology, and active participation of our partners on this global platform, we can inspire hope for our future generations." Dr Charles Chen Yidan, the founder of the Yidan Prize said at the conference.

The University of Cambridge's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Toope said that the university had a 'critical' role to play in addressing the challenges of mental health, and it goes to the heart of what we stand for as a center for research and practice in education.

Professor Pauline Rose, Director of Research for Equitable Access and Learning Center, the University of Cambridge, said that inspired by the achievements of Sir Fazle, this year's conference discussed what works in education for the most marginalized communities.

"BRAC since the 1980s has been a world-leader in this area. BRAC's impact seems to stem from the fact that they gather evidence about their effectiveness and adapt their programmes accordingly, which helps to make their work adaptable and replicable in other countries. At the REAL Centre at the Faculty of Education, we have carried out assessments that suggest that similar reasons lie behind the success of another organization, CAMFED, in supporting the education of marginalized girls in Tanzania," she said.

BRAC IED's Executive Director Erum Mariam attended the conference. She said Sir Fazle dedicated his life to serve the needs of people living in poverty all around the world. Among his many contributions, he is best known for making girls' education a priority in Bangladesh with women as the drivers of change.

"Sir Fazle scaled a unique non-formal primary education model in every district of Bangladesh maintaining a strict policy of opening a one room school only if 70 percent of the students are girls. Started in 1985 BRAC's s non-formal schools have had six million graduates who would have otherwise been left behind," Erum Mariam said.

Professor Anna Vignoles from Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, hosted a panel discussion on children's mental health. She found that there is a growing global awareness of the mental health needs of children, and a growing consensus that mental health is an important indicator of the success or otherwise of any society.

"Children in particular experience a range of problems and challenges, including poverty, abuse, bereavement etc. Evidence from the World Health Organisation survey suggests that around a third of all mental health problems are down to such childhood adversities. We need to be clear what the main factors causing any increase in young people's mental health problems are, and the extent to which they really can be addressed by schools, rather than requiring a wider societal response. Second, we need to have far better evidence on what kinds of interventions are effective in a school setting, and reassure ourselves that schools are indeed the right institutions to be tackling the problem," Anna Vignoles said.

"We look forward to finding many more innovative solutions through working closely with educators who share our passion and determination to build a more inclusive society for everyone. Together, we can transform great ideas into meaningful actions. It is on the notion of the need for closer collaborations and collective impact that we curate these debates to create a new philosophy for the future of education," Dr Charles Chen Yidan said.

At Yidan Prize Conference 2020, Professor Toope announced officially that the University of Cambridge would be creating a new role – Professor of Psychology of Education and Learning Studies, which will be based in its Faculty of Education. The new post will strengthen existing research into how better to support young people's well-being and mental health, in particular through the education system.

The first post-holder will be Professor Gordon Harold, currently at the University of Sussex, who has led several, field-changing studies into the relationship between domestic adversity and young people's mental health, enabling schools and teachers to do more to support pupils with depression and anxiety.

The conference was broadcast live online to encourage educators from around the world to participate in discussions on important educational issues.

Yidan Prize Conference Series: Europe 2020 Held at Cambridge, with a Focus on Important Global Education Issues

Cambridge, UK, Mar 12, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – Yidan Prize Conference Series: Europe 2020 was held at Jesus College, the University of Cambridge. This year's conference focused on two themes: education and international development; wellbeing and education.

Professor Pauline Rose, Director of Research for Equitable Access and Learning Center, Cambridge

Erum Mariam, Executive Director, BRAC IED

Professor Anna Vignoles, Faculty of Education, Cambridge

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Toope announced officially that Cambridge would be creating a new role – Professor of Psychology of Education and Learning Studies in its Faculty of Education.

Dr Charles Chen Yidan, Founder of Yidan Prize, Presents the Prestigious Award to Professor Usha Goswami at Cambridge University

Cambridge, UK, Mar 11, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – Dr Charles Chen Yidan, founder of the Yidan Prize visited the United Kingdom this week to present the prestigious award to Professor Usha Goswami at the University of Cambridge.

"We hold high respect for Professor Goswami's visionary approach to answer for our children's well-being and their future. It is exciting to see her ground-breaking work setting the scientific basis in understanding how we can help every child succeed. As education continues to drive forward fundamental changes in our societies, it is our hope that deeper knowledge into brain functions would open new possibilities for better access to learning," Dr Charles Chen Yidan said at the award ceremony.

Usha Goswami is Professor of Cognitive Developmental Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of St John's College Cambridge. She founded and serves as Director of the world's first Center for Neuroscience in Education. Her research revealed the brain basis of rhythm perception, showing how this neural process is impaired in developmental dyslexia. These discoveries are enabling transformative educational interventions that have the potential to benefit millions of children worldwide.

Professor Usha Goswami was awarded the Yidan Prize for Education Research in September 2019 for her ground-breaking neuroscience research in understanding brain function, which allows educators to design different teaching pedagogy, techniques and tools to help children with dyslexia and special needs to learn languages more effectively.

The University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Toope, remarked at the ceremony: "We are incredibly grateful to Charles Yidan Chen for establishing the Yidan Prize. It is a prize that inspires and encourages educational innovation and research, and which will inspire and encourage the generations to follow. Congratulations to Professor Usha Goswami, who embodies the University's mission to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning and research and research at the highest international levels of excellence."

"I am deeply honored to receive the Yidan Prize, and to have my research in educational neuroscience, language and literacy recognized by the Foundation. I whole-heartedly endorse the Yidan Prize Foundation's mission to create a better world through education. Children's language and reading skills are fundamental to their ability to access the opportunities offered by education," Professor Goswami said.

As a Yidan Prize Laureate, Professor Goswami received a gold medal and HK$30 million (around US$3.9 million), half of which is a cash prize and the other half a project fund.

Professor Goswami plans to use the Yidan Prize project fund for a dedicated neuroimaging investigation of developmental language disorder (DLD). Children with DLD have difficulties in acquiring oral language in the absence of some neurodevelopmental issues. Worldwide, it is estimated that 7% of children in every culture are affected – over 15 million children.

The research data empowered by the Yidan Prize project fund will potentially reveal the brain basis of DLD, leading to the development of innovative intervention techniques to enable children with DLD to access education normally.

Further the neural data will be rich enough to create a classifier by using machine learning approaches to identify children at risk of DLD, enabling early screening in infancy, which is much needed but currently impossible. By collecting matched neural data to that with dyslexic children, Professor Goswami can also create a classifier to discriminate the DLD brain response from the dyslexic brain response, this would be ground-breaking.

"We are so pleased to be working closely with Professor Goswami, supporting her inspiring work which could benefit millions of children. We all know that having the right environment for individuals to thrive is so important, and we greatly anticipate that, here in Cambridge, exciting findings will open doors for passionate educators to apply innovative technology and solutions to create a more inclusive global community," Dr Charles Chen Yidan said.

"The award of the Yidan Prize enables me to extend my rhythm research into oral language difficulties, a long-term ambition of mine. I'm incredibly grateful for what the prize makes possible," Professor Goswami said.

NetDragon’s Multiple Online Education Products Support Continuous Online Learning amid No-School Period

HONG KONG, Feb 11, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – NetDragon Websoft Holdings Limited ("NetDragon" or "the Company", Hong Kong Stock Code: 777), a global leader in building internet communities, acknowledges that the novel coronavirus has recently been a major concern for many. In order to support the call of China's Ministry of Education ("MoE") to "build online cloud classes to ensure students can study at home when face-to-face classes are not allowed", NetDragon announces that, as a part of upholding corporate social responsibility, the Company's online education platform One Stop Learning is introducing a new service plan to provide live-streaming of courses for over 10 million users free of charge. Meanwhile, NetDragon also offers online interactive education platform and resources to teachers and students in Hong Kong and Macau to continue virtual schooling for free.

On 1 February, the Fuzhou Bureau of Education published the "Guidelines on proper management of education for primary, secondary, and vocational schools amidst postponement of school semesters". The guidelines state that NetDragon's One Stop Learning is chosen as the official platform in support of Fuzhou's "Continuous Learning amid School Suspension" mandate. NetDragon's One Stop Learning platform will facilitate online learning of over one million teachers and students as well as several million parents, showcasing technical capabilities of NetDragon and its One Stop Learning platform in sustaining quality service.

On top of Fuzhou, One Stop Learning platform has also been aiding the Department of Education of Hubei Province. In collaboration with Hubei Province, NetDragon established the "Hubei Education Cloud Platform", which has gradually rolled out free education services, including online lectures, online teaching videos and micro lessons, to over a million teachers and students in Hubei Province. The construction and testing of the platform were completed in merely three days and live trials were conducted in three cities, including Macheng, Xiantao and Yangxin on 30 January. The platform received enthusiastic support from the Center for Educational Technology of Xiantao City. One Stop Learning platform will extend its services to support online live stream schooling for nearly 30 cities, counties and districts in Hubei Province and ensure "Continuous Learning amid School Suspension" is well-implemented.

The service of One Stop Learning platform's "Continuous Learning amid School Suspension" not only provides the latest information of the novel coronavirus and public health measures, but also supports features including teachers' class preparation and teaching, online assignments and exams, live-communication between schools and parents, academic research, and operational management that allows users to efficiently accomplish their daily work.

In addition to One Stop Learning, NetDragon is offering its integrated software for lesson preparation and delivery, 101 Education PPT, to all teachers in China free of charge, to facilitate easy online lesson preparation and delivery. Supported on multiple platforms including PC, iOS and Android, 101 Education PPT is an integrated teaching software which comes with millions of readily-available teaching materials. Besides, Kami English, an oral English teaching and learning assistant system for K-12 students introduced by NetDragon's subsidiary Chivox, is opening all online VIP-exclusive services free of charge to all students and teachers in primary and secondary schools across the country, as well as extending VIPs' subscription period, to ensure students can carry on with their English learning during this school suspension period.

In Hong Kong and Macau, classes are also tentatively suspended until March or later. As such, Edmodo, a subsidiary of NetDragon, will continue to support online interactive learning during the period. On the Edmodo platform, teachers can share reading materials and educational videos with the class, along with online discussions to encourage independent learning among students, such that they can keep up with their learning progress. On the other hand, the Company also uses Amazon Web Services ("AWS") to provide a free "cloud-based learning platform" to serve as a short-term solution for schools in Hong Kong with cross-border students who may encounter issues when commuting between Hong Kong and mainland China. This cloud can be utilised as a platform for teachers to share their lecture recordings and for students to retrieve learning materials; and coupled with the support of assignment delivery function on Edmodo, students can make use of these tools to facilitate their daily learning at home.

In the face of the novel coronavirus, we will continue our full support towards both students and teachers by rolling out more online education services. Knowledge is the key to a brighter future, and at NetDragon, we uphold this especially during such tough times.
