Indonesia’s Mandalika Circuit: Racing to end the 26-year wait

Lombok Island, Indonesia, Aug 23, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – The Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) has completed the paving of the main track of the Special Road Area (JKK) of the 4.31-kilometer Mandalika Circuit in Central Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province. The completion of the work was marked by a ceremony held at corners 2 and 3 of the Mandalika International Street Circuit on Sunday (August 15, 2021).

The ceremony was attended by NTB Governor Zulkieflimansyah and members of his administration, Assistant Deputy of Tourism & Creative Economy, Minitstry of Maritime Affairs & Investment Sartin Hia, ITDC Director Abdulbar M Mansoer and ITDC boardmembers, Director of Infrastructure at PT PP Yul Ari Pramuraharjo, Head of Central Lombok District Lalu Pathul Bahri, and Director of Construction & Development at MGPA Dwianto Eko Winaryo.

The completion of asphalting construction marked the Mandalika Circuit's readiness to host the international FIM Superbike World Championship (WSBK) from November 12-14, 2021, officials said.

Advantage Mandalika

Director of construction and development of the Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA), Dwianto Eko Winaryo, revealed that the newest Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), said to be the best in the world, was used for the Mandalika International Circuit, giving it an edge over even Malaysia's Sepang Circuit.

"Not all circuits in the world use this type of asphalt. Because the product was only released in 2015. Several circuits with SMA are Silverstone, Dubai, and Philip Island. Not even Sepang (has used SMA) because it was built in 2012," he informed during Sunday's ceremony.

SMA is an asphalt mixture that is used to coat the top surface of the asphalt, Winaryo explained. The asphalt layer is intended to strengthen the structure of the surface layer of the track so that it remains strong through stone-by-stone contact, he added.

"This type of asphalt has a high penetration power or Penetration Grade (PG) 82. And this PG 82 was only released in 2014-2015, so not all circuits in the world use this kind of asphalt," said Wiaryo. "There are a number of advantages of using SMA. One advantage is that the track remains non-slippery when there is rain. This reduces the risk of accidents during rains.

To support the asphalting progress using SMA, the MGPA brought in coarse aggregate Tau stone from Palu, Central Sulawesi – famous for its hardness. But for the underlay asphalt, we used stone from North Lombok and East Lombok. Seven thousand tons of Palu stone were transported in two stages for the asphalting.

"In addition, MGPA brought in cellulose fiber additives from Germany to glue the stone and asphalt. Meanwhile, the limestone filler was brought in from Ponorogo and Probolinggo, East Java" he said. "So, we brought the best in the world to the Mandalika circuit," he emphasized.

A scenic view

Automotive expert Arief Kurniawan said if all its facilities are properly equipped, the Mandalika Circuit will become the new favorite track for racing. He believes that the Mandalika Circuit would be able to beat even the Sepang Circuit, Malaysia and Chang Circuit, Thailand, which have already hosted MotoPG events.

The Mandalika Circuit has a natural selling point with its location, he pointed out. "The circuit has a unique selling point, the location is in a special economic area, and the beach is also beautiful. Even though the access (to the) road is still difficult, but in the next four to five years the access will be easy, it takes a process," Kurniawan stated.

"Surrounded by panoramic views of the hills and the sea on the southern coast of Lombok Island, the Mandalika International Street Circuit is set to later become the only roadway circuit in the MotoGP calendar," he added. "The circuit's paddock area can accommodate 40 garages, while the main tribune has a capacity of more than 50 thousand seats.

"While the standing tribune is designed to hold approximately 138 thousand people and hospitality suites are planned to accommodate 7,700 people. The paddock area, main tribune, standing tribune, and hospitality suites will not be permanent and can be dismantled when there is no racing, including the circuit track that can be converted into a highway," he noted.

Fastest construction

Director of PT Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), Abdulbar M Mansoer, claimed the construction work of the main track in the Special Area Road (JKK) has been the fastest, ever. "Work on this circuit began on June 15, 2020 and finished by August 15, 2021, or one year and one month, and this is the fastest in the world. We want to finish the construction quickly since we aim to host the 2021 MotoGP," Mansoer explained.

"The installation of concrete barriers and the construction of tunnels has been completed, which will serve as the audience's access to the circuit area, the service area, the hotel, and other facilities in the track area. Overall, the construction work on the Mandalika International Street Circuit is around 92 percent complete, he said. Work is in progress on other supporting facilities, such as the race control and foundation pit building," he added.

"Currently, we are preparing a medical center equipped with a helipad. The operation and procurement of medical equipment for medical facilities are supported by the Ministry of Health. Overall, the construction of the JKK has approached 92 percent," Mansoer remarked.

The circuit is expected to be completed by September 12, 2021, or before the FIM Superbike World Championship (WSBK), an international motorcycle racing event, scheduled to be held from November 12-14, 2021. The Circuit's homologation virtual assessment was conducted on August 12 this year and attended by representatives from Dorna Sport, the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) and ITDC's subsidiary, MGPA.

"The assessment was the world's first virtual assessment of the circuit track and was carried out in a professional manner," Mansoer remarked. "We are very grateful that during the virtual assessment, Dorna Sport expressed their positive feedback and confidence in the construction progress of the Mandalika Circuit."

He said he was optimistic that the Mandalika Circuit can end Indonesia's 26-year wait for hosting international motorcycle racing.

Motul propels Pramac Racing to maiden MotoGP victory

After a long summer break, the MotoGP paddock roared to life once again in the Styrian Alps, as the Red Bull Ring came alive for Round 10 of the 18-race calendar. The Styrian GP lived up to the hype, delivering loads of nail-biting excitement, unexpected shocks and heart-stopping crashes. The highlight, however, was Pramac Racing claiming their maiden MotoGP win after 20 years competing in the series, coming after a stellar ride by rookie Jorge Martin. Martin edged out defending champion Joan Mir of Team Suzuki and maintained his composure after an early red flag to seal a notably well-deserved win. Motul played a key role as lubricant partner for both the top 2 finishing teams in the race.

Jorge Martin claimed his first MotoGP victory

It was a vital race for the Pramac Racing rookie, having missed 4 races of his first MotoGP season due to injury. Martin was able to bounce back and deliver a powerful performance in Styria. He claimed pole position on Saturday and followed that up with an outstanding victory on Sunday. Pramac Racing has been making steady strides towards competing amongst the top MotoGP teams. At the start of the 2021 season, Motul was announced as Pramac Racing’s Official Lubricant Partner. The new collaboration was a direct result of Motul’s understanding and development of lubricants for racing machines. Since the Ducati team began using Motul, they have achieved 6 podium finishes this season. The MotoGP competition and results from the Ducati Desmosedici allows Motul to constantly experiment and innovate the product, to ensure Motul delivers the best oil to their customers around the world.

Team Suzuki Joan Mir put up a challenging fight for the race lead

Although Martin set an amazing pace, the thing that was more commendable was his ability to defend from the 2020 World Champion, Joan Mir. Mir put up an excellent fight in his Motul powered Suzuki GSX-RR, however, fell short by 1.5 seconds when the chequered flag fell. Team Suzuki has been a dominant force in the MotoGP for many years, and the Japanese factory team has maintained a technical partnership with Motul for more than three decades.

Motul has held a reputation for developing the highest grade of racing lubricants for several decades. With Team Suzuki and Pramac Racing backed by Motul’s extensive R&D department, they are able to implement the latest lubricant technology in their motorbikes. The commercial 300V range is engineered by incorporating findings of performance in the MotoGP. Pushing the limits of the Motul lubricant is the only way to make gains, hence Motul continues their dedication to support motorcycle racing at the highest levels.

The Styrian GP was the first of two back-to-back race weekends at the Red Bull Ring. Jorge Martin’s brilliant win propelled him to P12 in the rider standings, while his team mate Johann Zarco managed to do enough to maintain his spot in P2. Team Suzuki’s Joan Mir jumped one spot to P3 and his team mate Alex Rins slotted in behind Martin in P13. Historically, this circuit layout has suited the Ducati and Suzuki bikes extremely well, as further reiterated from their solid points scoring weekend. Pramac Racing and Team Suzuki will hope to continue this run into the MotoGP Grand Prix von Osterreich at the same track next weekend. Both Motul teams will be ones to watch out for as they look primed to repeat their success in consecutive races.

Mandalika Circuit could emerge as favorite in racing world: Expert

Lombok Island, Indonesia, Jul 28, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – The Mandalika Circuit in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, which is expected to be completed by 2022, has the potential to become a new favorite in the international racing world, an expert has said. "Once it is finished, this circuit will be gorgeous, and the track is flowing. This fast circuit will be the new favorite in the international racing world," motorsport aficionado Arief Kurniawan told ANTARA last Thursday (July 22, 2021).

Mandalika Circuit has a unique selling point: It is in the Special Economic Zone (KEK Mandalika), surrounded by beautiful beaches and the Indian Ocean.

Dorna Sports S.L. has designated Mandalika Circuit as one of the venues for MotoGP.

Mandalika's developer, the Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), is targeting completion of the 4.3-km circuit with 17 corners to meet the specifications and pass the homologation test of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM).

The Mandalika Grand Prix Association, the circuit's promoter and operator, noted that as of mid-July this year, construction work on the circuit was 81.42 percent complete. Meanwhile, work on the run-off gravel, run-off grass, north tunnel and retaining wall, outer and inner service road, and concrete barrier installation was more than 95 percent complete.

Speaking on the construction progress, Kurniawan observed the circuit has not been able to meet FIM's requirements since the paddock has not been built. "But even without the homologation qualification, Mandalika Circuit has been chosen by World Superbike (WSBK) to host the championship on November 14 this year, while the plan to host MotoGP had to be postponed until March next year."

Work on the circuit's asphalt and track lane is expected to be finished by the end of July 2021, before FIM's representatives inspect it for homologation, at least three months before the event, to determine the circuit's eligibility as a venue for the world racing championship, he said.

To meet FIM's requirements, the asphalt, run-off, pitstop, paddock building, health facility and helipad need to be completed and a hospital provided in the surrounding area. Once completed, Mandalika Circuit will be comparable to circuits such as Sepang, Malaysia and Chang, Thailand, already well-known as MotoGP venues, Kurniawan said.

"Because Mandalika Circuit has a unique selling point: It is in the Special Economic Zone (KEK Mandalika), surrounded by beautiful beaches and the Indian Ocean. We will also add polish to make the circuit more accessible in the next four years," he remarked.

Forty garages have been made available within the circuit's paddock area and the main tribune has been prepared to accommodate 50 thousand seats, while the standing tribune will hold 138 thousand people, Kurniawan informed. The circuit will also house hospitality suites for 7,700 people.

The paddock, main tribune, standing tribune and hospitality suites can be dismantled, and the circuit track can function as a normal roadway when there is no racing schedule, explained Kurniawan. Surrounded by panoramic hills and the beaches of South Lombok Island, the Mandalika Circuit would be the only street circuit made part of the MotoGP agenda.

Motul powers Honda motorbikes to a weekend full of victories

Motul and Honda enjoyed a long standing relationship, working together to develop superior racing grade engine oils for Honda motorbike engines. Over the July 17 and 18 weekend, Honda racing teams showcased how this collaboration with the French oil manufacturer has resulted in amazing results. F.C.C. TSR Honda France took their first win of the FIM Endurance World Championship 2021 season at the 12 Hours of Estoril in Portugal. Similarly, Motul-powered Team HRC secured the overall victory at MXGP of The Netherlands. It was an incredible weekend to celebrate for Motul, helping Honda achieve success across multiple championships.

F.C.C. TSR Honda France celebrate their win on the podium

The FIM EWC witnessed spectacular racing as the series shifted to the famous Cicuito do Esotril on the Portuguese Riviera. Notwithstanding some of the hottest temperatures of the year, F.C.C. TSR Honda France rose to the occasion and secured an emphatic win. Honda’s collaboration with Motul over the last few decades has led to the development of the Motul 300V Factory Line Racing Kit Oil 2376H 0W-30 ESTER Core®, engineered specifically for the CBR1000RR engine. The Honda EWC bike has proved to be highly compatible with this lubricant, delivering superior power output without compromising reliability. The 300V lubricant helped keep the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP reliable for more than 400 laps. The other Motul-powered Honda team, National Motos, was able to take a well-deserved podium finish in the Superstock class. They were also awarded the Dunlop Independent Trophy for a second race running. The strong results of both Honda teams was a testament to the performance the Motul 300V can deliver.

The EWC Honda team had no trouble dealing with the conditions

The fourth round of the FIM MXGP in The Netherlands took place in Oss on Sunday. Tim Gasjer from Team HRC went into the weekend as the championship leader. Motul has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Team HRC, providing them with lubricants for the highly demanding Motocross competition and achieving championship success over the previous years. Team HRC’s CRF450RW uses the Motul 300V Factory Line Off Road 5W-40 4T to ensure high performance and reliability throughout the race. The lubricant is able to perform at high RPM levels and protects the bike engine from shocks and stress experienced in the dirt racing competition. Tim Gasjer achieved P3 in the first race and P2 in the second race, awarding him the overall victory for the weekend and extending his championship lead.

Tim Gasjer from Team HRC took the overall win at the MXGP in Netherlands

F.C.C. TSR Honda France sit just 5 points behind championship leaders

Motul’s association with Honda is the perfect example of the French company’s philosophy of developing and testing products in a racing application before making it available to a wider customer base. The high performance characteristic of the 300V has been detrimental to the championship success the lubricant has been able to attain for so many years, powering numerous teams to victory. Motul continues to work with OEMs to improve and innovate their products, providing the best results for their customers. The Honda teams’ achievements over the third weekend of July proved once again how well Motul 300V works to provide performance.

Singapore, June 25, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – The 2021 edition of the FIM Endurance World Championship kicked off at the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans with the inaugural 24 Heures Motos. After a long season break, 46 teams lined up at the starting grid, ready to get the latest installment of the championship underway. The newly restructured Suzuki team, Yoshimura SERT Motul, started from P2 on the grid after a competitive couple of qualifying sessions. Motul played a key role in ensuring continuous performance and durability out of their EWC bike at a race that requires extreme levels of robustness. The Franco-Japanese team had a near perfect weekend taking 64 out of the 65 available points and establishing a healthy 16-point lead in the championship battle.

Yoshimura SERT Motul team lifts the trophy

Like previous seasons, the #1 Suzuki GSX-R1000R was powered and lubricated by Motul 300V. Announcing the entry of the new team in dominating fashion, Yoshimura SERT Motul finished 8 laps clear of the rider in P2, taking a comfortable victory. The EWC bike was commandeered by riders Gregg Black, Xavier Simeon, Sylvain Guintoli and Kazuki Watanabe. It was a challenging race for the riders with some thrilling battles on the track, but their consistent pace and experience gave them a significant lead over the chasing pack.

Thrilling battles on track for the lead

Endurance races like this championship prove to be the ultimate testing ground for Motul products with changing conditions and extreme engine strain. Yoshimura SERT Motul Technical Coordinator, Quentin Menard, provided insights on the team’s choice of working with Motul.

Why does your team choose Motul 300V as your lubricant of choice?

“We have worked with MOTUL for many years and we trust them. With all these years, we saw how efficient Motul lubricants are! Motul 300V combines performance and longevity. We use Motul 300V because it is simply the best product we can find in the market.”

Endurance races present several challenging condition changes, how do Motul lubricants enhance performance and reliability of your bikes?

“With 24h Races, we face many different weather conditions. From hot temperature to hard rain, we know Motul Lubricants are 100% efficient. In fact, properties of Motul products (300V Engine Oil, Chain paste, etc.) aren’t modified even when we face hard changes in weather conditions.”

What is the best part about working with Motul to further improve the team’s performance throughout the FIM EWC season?

“Motul is a First-class partner for us, always attentive to our needs and developing regarding our request. At our workshop, we have all Motul’s products to prepare our Race bikes at our disposal. Since Motul guarantees us excellent quality products, we can prepare our bikes very carefully and without any stress because we know their products’ reliability.”

National Motos had an impressive showing at season opener

Furthermore, Motul-powered National Motos took an impressive victory in the Superstock class after starting in P7. The team quickly made up positions and was jostling for the top step of the podium right until the closing couple of hours in the race. With superior pace, the #55 Honda CBR1000RR came out on top and finished 2 laps ahead of the next best Superstock bike. It was an emphatic victory for the team and Honda, securing the best finish in the team’s history at 24H of Le Mans. Motul also supported the efforts of F.C.C. TSR Honda France, which finished P6 in the EWC class after a crash and untimely electrical problems saw them give up the podium places. However, the team demonstrated their true endurance spirit, fighting to make up for the lost time and gather some points towards the closing stages of the race.

It was a weekend to remember for Motul, with winning bikes in both categories being powered by their lubricants. The French oil manufacturer will be hoping to continue their impressive performance throughout the demanding endurance championship calendar. The FIM EWC moves to Portugal next, for the 12 Hours of Estoril in mid-July. Yoshimura SERT Motul currently sits at the top of the leaderboard with 64 points and F.C.C TSR Honda France is in 4th place after accumulating 36 points in the opening weekend. National Motos also occupies the top spot on the Superstock standings after scoring 60 points.

Motul and Honda Racing Corporation Aim for the Top in World Super Bike Partnership

Singapore, Mar 31, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – One of Motul's longest-standing and most valued OEM partners is Honda, and the two companies have developed and enjoyed over many decades a dedicated technical collaboration and proud support of Honda's HRC factory racing teams in many different motorsport arenas. Now, for the 2021 season, Team HRC and its two riders, Alvaro Bautista and Leon Haslam, will benefit further from Motul's support as Official Lubricant Partner. Having made great steps forward with every race in 2020, there is only one aim for this season: the top!

A partnership with strength in depth

The trust and deeply cooperative working relationship that has developed over the years has seen Motul contribute to the performance, reliability and efficiency of HRC's competition models over all terrains including circuits, off-road and desert. The strength of this partnership has resulted in multiple victories in many different championships, most notably three wins for HRC at the Dakar Rally – the first being in 1989 and the most recent being this year, 2021. It has also led to several championship titles with Team HRC in MXGP including 2019 and 2020 in the hands of their super-dominant star rider Tim Gajser.

Smoothing the way with Motul

Together with Motul, Team HRC has been continuing development of the CBR1000RR-RR FIREBLADE, with continual feedback to engineers in Japan. Among Motul's international R & D centers is one in Japan whose engineers collaborate with HRC's engine development department on a range of different projects including the development of high-tech synthetic lubricants. Principal among these is the tailor-made Motul 300V Factory Line Racing Kit Oil 2376H 0W-30 fully synthetic engine oil which will be used alongside the Motocool Factory Line and MC CARE range of products.

The viscosity grade 0W-30, 100% synthetic lubricant yields a low traction coefficient thanks to the EsterCore technology, generating a friction reduction and therefore providing a significant gain in engine power.

Nicolas Zaugg, Motul Chief Value Officer: "We are delighted to be extending our great working relationship with Honda and HRC to WorldSBK. The collaborative vision and technological partnership we have developed together is the perfect example of Motul's living laboratory philosophy-developing and testing experimental products in a racing application before offering them for sale to a wider customer base. It's a win-win deal as far as we are concerned."

Tetsuhiro Kuwata, HRC Director – General Manager Race Operations Management Division: "We are pleased to announce Motul as Official Sponsor of our factory Team HRC in the highly competitive 2021 FIM Motul Superbike World Championship, thereby extending the relationship between our brands and further strengthening what is a very important project for us, with our CBR1000RR-R FIREBLADE SP. Honda and Motul each boast a long and successful history in high-level motorsport competition around the world, both brands being driven by the constant pursuit of victory and by the strong belief that the racing arena is the ideal setting in which to grow our human capital and develop our know-how and technology. In doing so, we offer our customers the best possible products, while bringing joy and excitement to our fans around the world. We are living in a time of great challenges, but we are ready to fight to achieve our mutual goals, which we will pursue with determination, positivity, and confidence in the future."
