Video Industry Sees Optimism Amidst Rationalisation, the Continued Importance of Asian Content and AI Everywhere

SINGAPORE, Apr 1, 2024 – (ACN Newswire) – The Asia Video Summit, the marquee conference for the video industry, kicked off in Hong Kong this year from 13 – 14 March, as part of the HK Entertainment Expo.

The Summit opened with an overview on the state of video in Asia, and how scale had redefined the industry. Vivek Couto, Executive Director, Media Partners Asia, shared that the ecosystem had changed, and a new pecking order was in place, with the global digital giants dominating video action in APAC, with a total video and screen revenues of US$24.4B coming out of Asia in 2023.

Global demand for premium Asian content continued to grow substantially, with 1.4B active unique users worldwide consuming almost 14B hours of Asian content in 2023, equivalent to a global average of 9.9 hours per user. Asian content also drove significant viewership and acquisition in APAC, with Korean, Anime and Chinese content coming up tops. Couto also shared that Chinese short form drama may be the next big thing, with the domestic market having grown to half a billion in 2023.

For Karen Fu Binxing, CEO of Huace Group, one of China’s largest content producers, the increasing interest in Chinese content overseas filled her with optimism on the rise of Chinese content, with a view to focus more on international cooperations. Fu also added that AI was unstoppable and would bring changes to all aspects of production and broadcasting trends in the content industry.

Wang Yangbin, CEO, Vobile, similarly added that generative AI was a new frontier but believed that the core value of the ecosystem were the rights and the intellectual property, both of which needed to be protected effectively for the industry to grow. However, for Michael Kwan, Senior IP Enforcement Advisor, TVB, AI was very much seen as a double-edged sword, with both pirates and companies using AI to achieve their goals, and infringers using AI to automate piracy and bypass site blocking mechanisms.

AI as a topic came up organically throughout the summit. Kelvin Yau, President, APAC and Overseas Marketing, International Business Department, iQiyi, talked about the use of technology across the company to help the business.  By listening to social trends, AI enabled social media posts to be done quickly, to help promote their shows and satisfy what people were curious about. “It was a sprint race before, now it’s a marathon. How do you win the marathon in keeping the pace, changes the whole game,” said Yau.

James Gibbons, President, Asia Pacific, Warner Bros. Discovery, stressed the importance of focusing on both growth and profitability for streaming in APAC. Gibbons also added that the reason the pay TV model worked so well was due to its dual revenue streams, and this needed to be recreated for streaming. The fact that advertising in a premium video environment lagged so far behind social and UGC video platforms was a huge issue for the industry, and hence it was incredibly important that people who had an investment in premium video came together to solve this issue.

Phil Hardman, SVP & General Manager, Asia, BBC Studios, highlighted the need for curation and aggregation of content, and felt the term pay TV was becoming redundant. Avi Himatsinghani, Founder & CEO, Rewind Networks, also said that it was all converging together, with linear services aggregated alongside streaming services. “We have to reinvent and work harder to make the narrative come alive,” added Himatsinghani.

For sports platform, beIN Media Group, now was a period of rationalisation. “It’s about carving out your niche and finding a sustainable model which can be profitable, and building scale through partnerships,” said Mike Kerr, MD, Asia. “The players that are left standing understand the value of sports and how to manage it from a consumer perspective.” However, with piracy taking US$30B out of the ecosystem it was not sustainable, and the industry needed to come together to combat it, added Kerr.

Closing off the Summit, Alexandre Muller, MD, APAC, TV5MONDE, said that the region needed to listen to local audiences and deliver what they want, and not listen to all the noise coming out of the US. “Asia is Asia, we need to follow our own path and find the right equilibrium among ourselves,” said Muller. “The world is just waking up to the great content that is coming out of Asia,” added Phil Hardman.

This year’s exhibition, themed Innovations for A Smarter World, will gather global next-generation smart solutions and disruptive innovative technologies to promote innovation and foster cross-disciplinary cooperation, showcasing Hong Kong’s strengths as an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub.

The HKTDC’s four major technology exhibitions in April – the HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition), HKTDC Smart Lighting Expo, InnoEX and HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) – will bring together about 4,300 exhibitors from more than 20 countries and regions. The inaugural Smart Lighting Expo and 15th edition of the International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) will be held from 6 to 9 April (Saturday to Tuesday), showcasing a wide range of cutting-edge smart lighting solutions and innovative products. InnoEX and the Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) will then run from 13 to 16 April (Saturday to Tuesday), presenting creative technology ideas and demonstrations.

Jenny Koo, Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: “Through our four technology exhibitions, the HKTDC aims to help promote solutions and develop Hong Kong as an international I&T hub. The development of new quality productive forces, as the national priority, will provide a huge market for Hong Kong’s development in innovation and technology, and the digital economy in Hong Kong. InnoEX not only showcases various innovative achievements but also brings together representatives from the governments of Hong Kong, Mainland China and ASEAN, as well as experts from different technological fields, to discuss important issues related to technology and smart city development. Through this approach, InnoEX promotes comprehensive cross-regional and cross-industry cooperation, aiming to enhance local I&T capabilities. The inaugural Smart Lighting Expo showcases smart lighting products, solutions and interconnected lighting technologies, contributing to the development of smart living in synergy with other technology exhibitions.”

International institutions join InnoEX to exhibit innovative solutions

As a founding event of the Business of Innovation and Technology Week (BITWeek), driven by the Hong Kong SAR Government and HKTDC, this year’s InnoEX will bring together exhibitors from 13 countries and regions, doubling the number from last year. Government representatives from Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries will share their experiences in developing smart cities, discuss collaboration across various sectors and explore sustainable development practices. Exhibitors will also have an opportunity to establish connections with officials from these regions and seek potential collaboration.

FILMART showcased a wide range of the latest film, TV and animation works as well as cutting-edge technologies in film production, including the debut of a virtual production studio in a collaboration with Hong Kong creative tech firm Votion Studios. A number of MoUs were signed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in film and entertainment.

Promoting ASEAN and trade cooperation

In recent years, the film and entertainment industry in ASEAN countries, particularly Thailand, has experienced robust growth. In addition to the Thai Pavilion set up by the Thai Ministry of Culture, FILMART also held a Thai Day on opening day to leverage Hong Kong’s platform for industry development and encourage collaboration between Hong Kong and Thailand.

Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive John Lee led a delegation to visit three ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, last year, encouraging ASEAN businesses to leverage Hong Kong’s platform to further grow their entertainment industry. Following the visit, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia staged a country pavilion for the first time at FILMART to showcase their film and TV productions. Rina Dayamanti, Festival Director of Jakarta Film Week and one of the pavilion representatives, expressed that Indonesian exhibitors were keen to meet a large number of Mainland Chinese buyers at the fairground and to explore the possibility of producing Indonesian versions of mainland IP projects.

The HKTDC also signed MoUs with several organisations, including the Department of International Trade Promotion of the Thai Ministry of Commerce and the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, to strengthen bilateral economic and cultural cooperation. Additionally, a MoU was signed with the Shanghai Broadcasting Film & Television Producers Association to diversify bilateral cooperation in entertainment beyond co-productions.

Film companies leveraged FILMART’s platform to announce their latest productions and upcoming plans. Notably, Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group unveiled the “Hong Kong Cultural and Art Industry Revitalisation Program”, committing to invest no less than HK$5 billion over the next five years to reinforce collaboration with Hong Kong’s cultural and entertainment industry.

To support Hong Kong’s growth as an innovation-driven economy and regional IP trading centre, FILMART this year strengthened its online platform, promoting exhibitors’ creative IPs, providing business referrals and facilitating business matching. As of early March, over 1,000 film and entertainment works have been uploaded to the platform.

First-time Indonesia Pavilion exhibitors Talamedia announced that Cercamon, Dubai-based global film sales firm, has acquired the worldwide rights of Crocodile Tears, a film co-produced by Talamedia and production companies from France, Germany and Singapore.

Another first-time Indonesia Pavilion exhibitor KawanKawan Media, which has produced award-winning films, also announced they concluded principal photography of their latest feature, Tale of the Land, which is now in post-production.

Euro-Asia co-production opportunities in the spotlight

The Hong Kong Film Development Council launched the Hong Kong-Europe-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme”, thanks to the Hong Kong SAR Government’s investment in the Film Development Fund, to encourage more international productions to come to Hong Kong to collaborate with Hong Kong filmmakers.

One of the guest speakers at EntertainmentPulse, Catherine Souyri-Desrosier, International Department Director of Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée, commented: “Co-production is at the heart of France’s cultural policy to promote cultural diversity, cultural exchanges and cross-fertilisation. As France has developed a proactive policy to support co-productions with more than 60 bilateral treaties, including with four countries in Asia: China, Cambodia, South Korea and India. We look forward to collaborating with outstanding Asian crews and developing high-quality productions.”

New wave in Hong Kong cinema

In recent years, Hong Kong has seen the emergence of talented young directors, whose works have made their mark in the global film industry, ushering in a new wave in Hong Kong cinema. Many of them were supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government’s First Feature Film Initiative and Film Production Financing Scheme.

At the concurrent EntertainmentPulse, Hong Kong film director Stanley Kwan said: “The Hong Kong SAR Government and industry veterans should assist high-quality films in reaching international audiences through various channels and bring new directors to people’s attention to encourage more new talents to create.”

Cross-media events at FILMART

The Digital Entertainment Summit featured at EntertainmentPulse explored trending topics in the world of digital entertainment, including animation and cross-border collaboration. Shimizu Shinji, Chief Advisor of Toei Animation, the animation production company behind box office hits Ikky-san and One Piece, shared his insights on the application of digital entertainment in animation creation. Furthermore, Across animation digital effects and interactive solutions, 38 Hong Kong production companies at the Hong Kong Animation and Digital Entertainment Pavilion showcased Hong Kong’s latest wave of young creatives.

FILMART is not only a trading platform for the film and entertainment industry, but also a showcase for music producers. Led by music director Dr Mui Kwong Chiu, the inaugural Hong Kong Film Music Fiesta – Rhythm of Martial Arts Music Concert featured iconic theme songs from classic Hong Kong films.

The online platform of FILMART will remain open until 13 April. Registered users can rewatch EntertainmentPulse seminars and connect with global buyers and exhibitors to explore more business opportunities.
