2023 CAP Consumer Surveys Continue to Show the Benefits of Effective Site Blocking

Singapore, May 15, 2023 – (ACN Newswire) – The most recent piracy landscape consumer surveys commissioned by the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) show that while piracy rates remain stable in many countries around Asia-Pacific, we have seen notable increases in piracy rates in Thailand and Taiwan, with a discernible increase also in Hong Kong. Notably, rights holders face challenges in procuring effective and efficient site blocking in all three of these countries. These consumer surveys acknowledge site blocking as an effective tool to mitigate piracy harm.

For those countries that are implementing site blocking effectively, there continue to be demonstrable effects in behavioral change with 62% of consumers in Indonesia and 64% in Malaysia indicating that they have changed their viewing habits as a result of pirate sites being blocked. Both of these countries have long-running, effective and efficient regulatory blocking regimes. In Singapore, one of the first countries in the region to allow rights holders to protect their content via the provision of judicial site blocking measures, it is notable that after almost ten years of this measure being in place, Singapore has the lowest percentage of consumer piracy in the region, with only 39% of consumers pirating. However there remains issues with the time and cost involved with obtaining site blocking orders in Singapore.

Encouragingly, the surveys show that regular site blocking not only stops consumers accessing pirated content online, but also drives them towards legitimate sources, with an average of 20% of consumers subscribing to paid services and an average of over 40% accessing legitimate free content services as a result of pirate sites being blocked. Furthermore, almost 50% of consumers around the region stated they would subscribe to legitimate paid online services if the content they wanted to watch was not available via a pirate source.

Awareness of the risks associated with online piracy also continues to grow, with at least 80% of consumers in every market around the region unequivocal that piracy has negative consequences. Consumers are aware that the perceived damage varies from job losses, impact on the creative industries and also the risk of malware infection on personal computers and devices.

In addition to consumers accessing pirate content via pirate streaming sites, apps or illicit streaming devices (ISDs), social media and messaging platforms providing access to pirated content continue to be a concern as one of the main sources of accessing pirate content. CAP is working with the major platforms across the region to address this issue.

Encouragingly, the survey also shows huge unmet potential as more than 60% of consumers across the region said they would subscribe to legitimate services if there was no pirate content available on social media and messaging platforms.

Matt Cheetham, General Manager of CAP, noted, "The evidence continues to show that site blocking, when implemented in an efficient and effective way, is an incredibly powerful tool to both stop online piracy, and direct consumers towards legitimate content." As with the 2022 survey, the data points towards an ongoing consumption of pirate content via social media and messaging platforms. However, Cheetham also noted, "The surveys also show the benefits of consumer education with a growing awareness amongst consumers of the negative consequences of piracy, particularly via illicit profiteering and malware."

This is the second time CAP's YouGov consumer surveys were undertaken across several countries at the same time. The surveys will continue to be repeated across the same countries annually, and in doing so, will continue to provide longitudinal analysis of consumer behavioral trends towards piracy and enforcement measures around the region.

ASEAN strives to increase cooperation and reduce tensions in the region

JAKARTA, May 13, 2023 – (ACN Newswire) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) chaired two of three meetings on the second day of the 42nd ASEAN Summit at Meruorah Hotel in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday. The two meetings chaired by Jokowi are the Retreat Session and Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Summit.

ASEAN strives to increase cooperation and reduce tension in the region

In his speech at the opening of the Session, Jokowi mentioned two important issues that became the focus of the discussion, namely reviews of the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and the implementation of the 5 Point Consensus (5PC) in handling the crisis in Myanmar.

Indonesia, as Chair of ASEAN 2023, encourages the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its fellow ASEAN member countries to move forward together to increase cooperation and reduce tensions in the region, both in the Southeast Asian region and the wider region, including the Indo-Pacific.

President Jokowi invited members of ASEAN to work in synergy to ease the rising tension in the Indo-Pacific region. According to Jokowi, one way to reduce tension in the region was by implementing the AOIP. "Concrete and inclusive cooperation is essential to ease tension in the Indo-Pacific. We can use the AOIP as a concrete platform for cooperation with partner countries," he remarked. Indo-Pacific is the world's fastest-growing region that accounts for 65 percent of the global economy.

On Indonesia's initiative, ASEAN launched the AOIP in 2019 to affirm the bloc's stance in playing its role in maintaining peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the region. AOIP prioritizes the practices of open and inclusive dialogue and cooperation instead of competition and rivalry. To increase the spirit of cooperation in the region, during its 2023 ASEAN chairmanship, Indonesia will hold several main events under the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific forum as part of the efforts to implement the AOIP.

The events also include an infrastructure forum, youth dialogue and digital development supporting sustainable development (SDGs), a creative economy forum, and the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit. Not only in the Indo-Pacific region, but Indonesia also encourages ASEAN to strive to reduce tensions within its own region, especially by helping Myanmar to resolve its political and humanitarian crises.

ASEAN has urged the junta to implement a Five-Point Consensus peace plan agreed in April 2021 that calls for a cessation of violence, dialogue with all stakeholders, and permitting the provision of humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said on Tuesday (May 9) that the implementation progress of the 5PC had been discussed with the ASEAN Foreign Ministers ahead of the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo. Indonesia, as ASEAN Chair, chose to conduct 'non-megaphone diplomacy' in resolving the Myanmar issues. Marsudi added that measures were taken to provide space for all parties to build trust and open communication.

At the opening of the ASEAN Summit Retreat Session on Thursday, President Jokowi stated that Indonesia, as ASEAN Chair, continuously strives for progress in the implementation of the 5PC, and through engagements with various parties urges for an inclusive dialogue, calls for the cessation of violence, facilitates the conclusion of the Joint Needs Assessment through the AHA Centre to deliver humanitarian assistance.

However, Jokowi admitted there had been no significant progress from implementing the 5PC. "Therefore, ASEAN unity is required to decide on the next steps," he said. Nevertheless, President Jokowi and Minister Marsudi have also emphasized that the lack of progress in implementing the 5 PC did not mean that ASEAN would give up on the situation in Myanmar.

In fact, it means that ASEAN must be more united to help fellow member countries, especially Myanmar to get out of the crisis, so that all ASEAN members "can move forward together and leave no one behind". Furthermore, Jokowi emphasized that issues related to the current situation in Myanmar should not hinder efforts to accelerate the development of the ASEAN community.

During its chairmanship, Indonesia adopted the theme of "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth," which reflects its will to make ASEAN important and relevant as the world's center of growth. Indonesia is seeking to strengthen ASEAN's capacity and institutional effectiveness in hopes of readying the bloc to face challenges in the next two decades.

The chair is also committed to escorting the Southeast Asian region towards ASEAN 2045 by making it more adaptive, responsive, and competitive through various measures that are in line with the principles found in the ASEAN Charter. In addition, Indonesia is willing to lead the ASEAN countries in efforts to strengthen economic recovery and make the region an engine of sustainable growth.

Face-down: Gravity’s effects on cell movement

TSUKUBA, Japan, May 13, 2023 – (ACN Newswire) – Researchers at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and colleagues in Japan have developed a specially coated, light-responsive surface that helps test how the direction of gravity impacts cell movements. The findings, published in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials, could lead to a better understanding of what happens to cells in people who are bedridden for prolonged periods and of the impact of gravity's direction on cancer cell migration.

The human body takes many different positions over its lifespan. Scientists wanted to find a way
to study how cell movement is impacted when the direction of gravity changes as our body positions
change. (Image created using materials from STAM Vol.24, Issue 1, Article 2206525 (2023) and
Canva.)

The special surfaces are made by coating glass slides with a combination of molecules that are responsive to light. Shining light on a central, circular area of the slide breaks up the molecules, clearing away a coating-free zone that cells can stick to. Once stabilized in this area, the scientists then use light to clear away an area surrounding the central circle. This encourages the cells to move in an outward direction to fill the square. The team investigated what happens to cell movement when the slide is placed upright, with the cells lying on top and the direction of gravity impacting the cells from top to bottom. They then conducted a similar test with the slide flipped over while supported on either side so that the cells are inverted and the direction of gravity is from the bottom of the cells to their tops.

"We found that the direction of gravity hindered collective cell migration in the inverted position by reducing the number of outward-moving leader cells at cluster edges and by redistributing shape-forming filaments, composed of actin and myosin, so that they kept the cells bundled together," explains biomaterials researcher, Shimaa Abdellatef, who is a postdoc at NIMS.

The coated, light-responsive surfaces provide an advantage over currently available methods that study the impacts of gravity's direction, as they require physical contact with the surface to which cells are attached. The new approach enables remote induction of cell migration.

"We plan to apply our approach to analyse the responses of cancer cells to the direction of gravity," says NIMS nanoscientist, Jun Nakanishi, who led the study. "We expect to find differences between healthy and diseased cells, which could provide important information about cancer progression in bedridden patients."

Fosun’s Strategy of “Streamlining the Organization” Begins to Bear Fruit and Offshore Syndicated Loan are Launched

HONG KONG, May 12, 2023 – (ACN Newswire) – According to people familiar with the matter, Fosun International's offshore multi-currency syndicated loan was officially launched in early May, and it has obtained a loan of more than US$450 million in equivalent so far. The offshore syndicated loan was jointly initiated by seven banks including Bank of China, Bank of East Asia, Commerzbank, Hang Seng Bank, HSBC, Natixis Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank as lead bookrunners. Since the formation of the syndicate, more than 10 banks have joined and banks may join through the "greenshoe option" in the next three months.

In January this year, Fosun's domestic entity obtained a syndicated loan of RMB12 billion. At that time, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Bank of Communications acted as joint lead banks, and China Minsheng Bank, the Export-Import Bank of China, and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank acted as participating banks to form a syndicate to provide Fosun High Technology, the domestic operating entity of Fosun International a RMB loan.

Market analysts believe that although Fosun has been involved in Nanjing Iron & Steel transaction disputes and other incidents some time ago, domestic and foreign banks have successively provided large amounts of credit support to Fosun, which reflects that mainstream financial institutions' recognition of Fosun's commitments to accelerate the sale of non-core assets and cash inflows for debt management. The significant financial support from banks will help Fosun reduce its dependence on public market financing, and the optimized debt structure will support subsequent liquidity management and sustainable business development.

Last year, negative opinions about Fosun's rating downgrade put pressure on Fosun, which also brought a lot of speculation to the market at that time. Market sentiment was dampened significantly, and onshore and offshore bond prices also plummeted. However, at the same time, Fosun redeemed EUR380 million bond in October last year and US$450 million bond in January this year, and recently redeemed EUR350 million Euro bond, totaling US$1.25 billion in offshore bonds. Meanwhile, in the first quarter of 2023, Fosun High Technology successfully redeemed RMB5.93 billion bond in the domestic open market. The market's previous doubts about its liquidity are invalid, and the company's efforts are notable. It is worth looking forward to Fosun's next step to further enhance the recognition of the market and banks.

At the subsidiaries business level, in 2022, Fosun experienced profit shocks due to overseas interest rate hikes, geopolitical conflicts, and the frequent occurrence of the epidemic. Since the liberalization of epidemic prevention measures in 2023, its focused strategy on core businesses in the household consumption sector has been accelerated and yielded results. In the first quarter of this year, the business of all segments showed a strong upward trend. In the Happiness segment, Yuyuan achieved an operating revenue of RMB15.244 billion, representing a year-on-year growth of 22.61%. The recovery trend of the core consumer business was obvious. The revenue of Yuyuan Jewelry and Fashion reached RMB11.494 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 28.55%. Benefiting from the overall relaxation of travel restrictions worldwide and the effective implementation of the company's strategy, Fosun Tourism Group's (FTG) profit attributable to the parent in the first quarter doubled compared with the same period in 2022, Club Med's business volume reached RMB5.004 billion, an increase of about 44.2%; during the May Day holiday this year, the total business volume of Club Med resorts in China exceeded the same period in 2022 by about eight folds, and exceeded the same period in 2019 by about 110%. In the Health segment, Fosun Pharma achieved an operating revenue of RMB10.871 billion in the first quarter, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.68%; net profit attributable to shareholders of the listed company after deducting extraordinary gain and loss was RMB919 million, representing a period-on-period increase of 14.78%; the revenue contribution of new and sub-new products further increased.

Previously, Goldman Sachs, Daiwa Capital Markets, Guotai Junan Securities, Soochow Securities and other domestic and foreign securities firms and investment banks successively published research reports, expressing optimism about Fosun's series of measures to reduce debt, optimize asset structure, and steadfastly focus on its core businesses. They believed that Fosun is well-positioned to achieve better performance in the future and assigned Fosun International a "Buy" or "Overweight" rating.
