HKTDC Export Index 2Q21: Export confidence rises for fifth consecutive quarter

HONG KONG, Jun 23, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) announced today that its Export Index has risen for the fifth consecutive quarter, soaring from a record low of 16.0 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic last year to 48.7 in the second quarter of 2021, which is close to expansionary territory. The sustained upturn indicates that local exporters have gradually regained confidence in the city's export outlook.

Presenting the HKTDC Export Index for the second quarter of 2021 and an analysis on opportunities in the "new normal" are researchers at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council: (from left) Assistant Principal Economist (Greater China) Alice Tsang, Director of Research Nicholas Kwan, Assistant Principal Economist (Global Research) Louis Chan

HKTDC Director of Research Nicholas Kwan said Hong Kong's exports have grown significantly in recent months, buoyed by the global revival in trade and the resumption of production activities. Total exports in the first quarter of 2021 increased by 33.2% year-on-year to HK$1,107.8 billion, with growth of 24.4% registered in April. "Led by Mainland China and the United States, the global economy has rebounded steadily, which will continue to bolster Hong Kong's export performance," Mr Kwan said.

Meanwhile, the HKTDC's Export Index survey showed that local exporters continue to have concerns. These include the persistence of the COVID-19 pandemic (41.5%), softening global demand (16.7%), prolonged trade tensions between the mainland and the United States (13.0%) and continuing pandemic-mandated border closures (11.6%).

"The global economic recovery is likely to be highly uneven. After taking into account a basket of factors, we decided to revise Hong Kong's export forecast in 2021 upward from 5% to 15%, albeit from a low base. This represents the biggest rebound since the city's recovery from the global financial crisis in 2010," Mr Kwan added.

Smaller orders, higher costs

Mr Kwan pointed out that while concerns remain, the impact of the pandemic has been gradually easing over the past few months. The percentage of respondents reporting that they had been negatively affected by pandemic-related issues fell from 78.2% in the first quarter of 2021 to 56.9% in the second quarter.

A reduction in order size (66.4%), increased transportation costs (46.4%) and logistics or distribution disruptions (42.6%) were cited as the three most common problems, Mr Kwan said. In addition to getting accustomed to a new normal of smaller orders and higher transportation costs, Hong Kong businesses have adopted new strategies to weather these challenges such as developing other product categories (53.8%), developing the mainland domestic market (49.5%), developing online sales channels (45.5%) and targeting new overseas markets (28.4%), with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc and Europe the most popular choices for diversification.

New opportunities under 14th Five-Year Plan

Mr Kwan said that China's 14th Five-Year Plan, coupled with the "dual circulation" development model, aims to stimulate domestic demand in the mainland, presenting enormous opportunities for Hong Kong businesses. About 40% of the exporters surveyed have developed or are intending to develop the mainland domestic market, yet are encountering various challenges such as intense competition (81.8%), difficulties in selecting suitable local sales partners and/or distributors (47.4%), and problems with mastering the required sales channels (44.0%).

"The HKTDC has formulated strategies to help Hong Kong companies capture domestic sales opportunities through both online and offline channels. We can help them understand business regulations, master market trends, establish contacts and expand their sales network through a series of promotional activities and new services," Mr Kwan said.

Major markets and industries rebound

The HKTDC conducts the Export Index survey every quarter, interviewing 500 local exporters from six major industries including machinery, electronics, jewellery, watches and clocks, toys and clothing, to gauge business confidence in near-term export prospects. The Index indicates an optimistic or pessimistic outlook, with 50 as the dividing line.

HKTDC Assistant Principal Economist (Greater China) Alice Tsang said: "The Export Index rose by 9.7 points to 48.7 in the second quarter. In line with this, exporter confidence continues to improve across almost all industry sectors and major markets." Looking at specific industries, machinery (up 13.0 points to 55.9) and electronics (up 9.8 points to 48.8) both outperformed the overall average. In terms of export markets, confidence in Mainland China (50.3) returned to expansionary territory while a more optimistic sentiment was seen in Japan (49.8), the European Union (49.2), the ASEAN bloc (49.1) and the US (49.0).

Ms Tsang added that the improving export sentiment is further evident in an upward trend in subsidiary indexes, including the Trade Value Index (up 10.7 points to 57.0) and Procurement Index (up 11.9 points to 45.5). The employment sentiment, however, remained subdued (down 1.6 points to 41.6).

Tech and eco products take the lead

HKTDC Assistant Principal Economist (Global Research) Louis Chan interviewed a number of consuls general and trade commissioners in Hong Kong and shortlisted some of the new opportunities for Hong Kong companies on the road to recovery.

United Kingdom
Under the new tariff regime, 47% of imported goods are tariff-free while the average tariff is as low as 5.7%. In addition, the UK has announced 10 new freeports as national hubs for trade, innovation and commerce, creating jobs, attracting new businesses and encouraging investment to help drive the country's post-Brexit growth. Collaboration opportunities exist in clean energy projects such as offshore wind power, smart energy systems, sustainable construction, precision agriculture, green finance and electric vehicle manufacture.

Italy
Italy was the first European country to be impacted by the pandemic. The Italian government launched its EUR 222 billion five-year National Recovery and Resilience Plan to revive the country's economy. The plan covers six areas including digitalisation, innovation, competitiveness and culture; the green revolution and ecological transition; infrastructure for sustainable mobility; education and research; cohesion and inclusion; and health. It is expected to add an extra 3.6 percentage points to Italy's gross domestic product growth by 2026.

Austria
40% of Austrian investments in Mainland China go via Hong Kong, while 70% of mainland investments in Austria are done via Hong Kong entities. Many Austrian brands have an eye on opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area arising from its expanding middle-class, and plan to access Greater Bay Area and Belt and Road markets via Hong Kong. Last year, an Austrian fibre producer, making eco-friendly renewable products, achieved a historic first, sending textiles that were 100% made in Austria directly to China by the China Railway Express.

Poland
Despite the uncertainties brought by the pandemic, Poland has the potential to become the digital heart of Europe. In May 2020, Microsoft announced a US$1 billion, seven-year digital transformation investment plan in Poland, featuring the opening of the company's first data centre in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), in partnership with Poland's leading cloud computing solutions provider, Chmura Krajowa. Around the same time, Google announced the launch of a new Google Cloud region in Warsaw, also a CEE first, with an investment of up to US$2 billion.

Mr Chan added that Hong Kong companies producing tech products and services have a better chance to succeed in the post-pandemic market, citing areas such as 5G-related smart devices, clothing made with anti-bacterial fabric, the cold supply chain and e-Health. He added that traditional products with a modern twist are also popular in niche markets, including proprietary IP toys, contemporary jade jewellery, at-home fitness gear, hiking equipment and more.

Grand Ming Group Holdings Limited Announces Annual Results for the Year Ended 31 March 2021

HONG KONG, Jun 19, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – Grand Ming Group Holdings Limited ("Company", together with its subsidiaries, collectively referred to as the "Group"; 1271.HK) announces its annual results for the year ended 31 March 2021 (FY 2020/21).

Highlights:
– Revenue amounted to HK$1,492.4 million, an increase of 65.3% from the previous financial year.
– Net profit was HK$149.0 million, representing an increase of 340.6%.
– Underlying profit, excluding the changes in fair value of investment properties, increased by 234.2% to HK$147.6 million.
– Proposed payment of final dividend of 4.0 HK cents per share.
– Stay positive toward lucrative business of owning and operating data centres via expanding portfolio of developing two new centres in near future.
– Seize opportunity to increase land reserve for property development in Hong Kong and cautiously explore property and property-related development opportunities in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China.

The Group's consolidated revenue increased approximately 65.3% from approximately HK$902.6 million for FY 2019/20 to approximately HK$1,492.4 million for FY 2020/21. The increase was primarily driven by revenue recognised from the building construction project at Kai Tak which was in full swing operation during the FY 2020/21.

The Group's underlying profit for FY 2021/21, excluding the changes in fair value of investment properties, amounted to approximately HK$147.6 million, representing an increase of approximately 234.2% as compared to an underlying profit of approximately HK$44.2 million for FY 2019/20. Underlying earnings per share were 10.4 HK cents (2020: 3.1 HK cents). The increase in profit mainly benefited from (i) an increase in revenue recognised from the construction segment; and (ii) sales of car parking spaces and one duplex residential unit on the top floor in the Cristallo project. Net profit for FY 2020/21 was approximately HK$149.0 million, representing an increase of approximately 340.6% when compared to that of approximately HK$33.8 million for FY 2019/20. Basic earnings per share were 10.5 HK cents (2020: 2.4 HK cents).

The Group believes a long-term high dividend policy is the best reward for our loyal shareholders. The Board now recommends paying a final dividend for FY 2020/21 of 4.0 HK cents per share. Together with the interim dividend of 4.0 HK cents per share, the total dividends for FY 2020/21 amounted to 8.0 HK cents per share, representing a payout ratio of approximately 77% (based on the total dividends and the Group's profit for the year excluding the change in fair value of investment properties).

During FY 2020/21, revenue derived from the construction business increased by approximately 128% or approximately HK$636.6 million, from approximately HK$497.1 million for FY 2019/20 to approximately HK$1,133.7 million for FY 2020/21. The significant increase was primarily attributed to the construction project at Kai Tak, Kowloon which the construction works commenced in May 2019 and worked in full swing during FY 2020/21.

The data centre leasing business is resilient. The utilisation rate for the Group's two high-tier data centre buildings, namely iTech Tower 1 and iTech Tower 2 remains high, driven by our expertise in data centre management providing uninterrupted customer services amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Revenue derived from this segment increased approximately 17.8% or HK$24.9 million, from approximately HK$139.8 million for FY 2019/20 to approximately HK$164.7 million for FY 2020/21, primarily driven by increased utilisation of iTech Tower 2 by committed customers.

In order to create a stable and growing cash flow stream, the Group is inclined to further diversify our footprint for high-tier data centres. In September 2020, the Group acquired two parcels of land in Fanling, New Territories for the purposes of developing into two new high-tier data centres. Application for the land-use change of these two parcels of land by way of land exchange is now underway.

The Group's first residential property development project namely "The Grand Marine" at Tsing Yi, New Territories is being developed into two residential towers with clubhouse and car park facilities. It provides a saleable area of approximately 345,000 square feet for 776 residential units. Superstructure work had completed, followed by the facade and interior fitting-out works are now underway. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. This project received tremendous responses in the market since its pre-sale launched in November 2019. Approximately 89% of the residential units were sold cumulatively with presale proceeds of approximately HK$4.5 billion being recorded.

The Group's luxury residential project, CRISTALLO, at No. 279 Prince Edward Road West, Kowloon was well sold. Sales and delivery of two apartments and six car parking spaces had been completed during the year, and revenue of approximately HK$194.0 million was recognized accordingly. Furthermore, six provisional sales and purchase agreements for six apartments totalling approximately HK$240 million had recorded. Sales and delivery of two apartments therein had been completed in May 2021 and completion of the remaining four apartments are scheduled to take place during the period from June 2021 to June 2022.

In order to increase its land bank, the Group completed the acquisition of land located at No.1 Luen Fat Street, Fanling, New Territories with a site area of approximately 6,800 square feet in January 2021. The Group plans to develop it into a residential-cum-retail property with a gross floor area of approximately 37,700 square feet and a land exchange application to convert the use of land is now under processing.

Mr. Chan Hung Ming, Chairman and Executive Director of Grand Ming Group Holdings concluded, "Year 2020 is a COVID-19 pandemic year casting challenge and impact to economies and businesses. With the imposition of effective measures against the pandemic including the COVID-19 vaccination programme, the pandemic situation is stabilized and a strong bounce in the residential property market in the first and second quarter of 2021 is recorded. We endeavored to sell the remaining units for properties 'Cristallo' and 'Grand Marine' in the spring boom, with 'Grand Marine' scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2021. We are inclined to be more active recyclers of capital over the next few years with eyes on maintaining an optimal capital structure. On the one hand, we actively accumulate our land reserve in Hong Kong for the development and operation of high-tier data centres which are believed a continuous surging growth especially the work-from-home model prevails even post-pandemic period; as well as the development of residential property. Therefore, we add three parcels of land in Fanling, New Territories during the year to build up our land bank and development pipeline. On the other hand, we are evaluating the return and risk parameters for various property development and property-related projects in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China. We will also continue to monitor the pandemic situation while refining our long-term property development strategies."

About Grand Ming Group Holdings Limited (1271.HK)

The Group is principally engaged in the business of building construction, property leasing and property development. As a local wholesale co-location provider of high-tier data centres, the Group is one of the dedicated service providers in Hong Kong which owns and uses the entire building for leasing to customers for data centre use. Singapore’s Commodities Intelligence Centre Signs Investment Agreement to Establish Its Overseas Digital Trade Platform in Chongqing’s Guoyuan Port

SINGAPORE, Jun 17, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – Singapore-based Commodities Intelligence Centre (CIC) has signed an investment agreement with Chongqing Liangjiang New District Management Committee. The agreement will see an investment commitment of RMB 10 million (S$2.07 million) by CIC to establish its overseas digital trade platform in China's Guoyuan Port in Chongqing Municipality. The agreement was formally inked by Mr Luo Lin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Working Committee and Director of the Management Committee of Chongqing Liangjiang New Area and Mr Peter Yu, Chief Executive Officer of CIC, at the "Chongqing Liangjiang New Area Key Technology Innovation Projects Virtual Signing Ceremony". CIC's parent company, ZALL Smart Commerce Group (2098.HK), also announced its plans to invest in Guoyuan Port for their projects in West China.

The project is expected to contribute towards the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative, and will be able to tap on CIC platform capabilities in Singapore to enable data interconnection and interoperability and grow a vibrant commodity trading ecosystem in Guoyuan Port. The move comes as CIC is stepping up efforts to expand its global supply chain network and provide companies with increased access to market opportunities in China and Southeast Asia, helping them uncover new business opportunities, reduce transaction costs and achieve greater trading synergies globally amid the pandemic.

Mr Peter Yu, Chief Executive Officer of CIC, shared, "The need to strengthen the digital connectivity of the world's supply chain ecosystem is more important than ever today. CIC is proud to have inked this strategic agreement to establish our overseas digital trade platform in Chongqing, an important region that connects the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Belt and Road route. This investment affirms our continued commitment to expand our technology-enabled global B2B trading ecosystem that would enable businesses to reap the benefits of the global digital trade economy on the back of the world's largest trade pact, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and China's dual circulation strategy, with greater digital trade connectivity between China and ASEAN."

Leveraging the strategic connectivity advantages of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Multimodal Transportation Demonstration Base, the new International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC) and other international trade channels of the Chongqing Guoyuan Port National Logistics Hub, CIC's digital trade platform would provide global trading services, such as transaction matching, customs declaration and clearance, supply chain logistics, trade finance, and global trade compliance to facilitate the development of an international commodities trading cluster in Guoyuan Port. The platform could also help accelerate the opening up of China's inland economy and drive global commodity trading and investments into Chongqing, thereby bringing about deeper economic integration with China's Belt and Road Initiative and the country's western provinces and regions.

Located in the core part of Chongqing's Liangjiang New Area, Guoyuan Port is a logistics hub integrating "water, rail, and road transport" of China's inland rivers, and is the only port-type national logistics hub in west China. CIC's project signing comes amid deeper Sino-Singapore cooperation under the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative, and increased investments by Singapore enterprises into Chongqing in sectors such as aviation, financial services, logistics and information and communication technology.

Dynasty expects a 2.2-fold year-on-year revenue growth to over HK$100 million in the first four months of 2021

HONG KONG, Jun 16, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – Dynasty Fine Wines Group Limited (Stock Code: 828), a premier winemaker in China, issued its profit alert yesterday. The Group expects to record a significant year-on-year increase of approximately 220% to over HK$100 million in its unaudited revenue for the first four months of 2021 ("the Period"), which also represents an increase of approximately 20% when compared with its unaudited consolidated revenue of approximately HK$89.9 million in the six months ended 30 June 2020.

The significant increase in Dynasty's revenue during the Period was mainly attributable to three factors: Firstly, as the COVID-19 pandemic has gradually been brought under control in China, the government has relaxed the restrictions on consuming places, which has boosted the resumption of consumption occasions and consumer sentiment, as well as the rebound in sales resulting from economic growth, particularly in terms of the growth in domestic demand. Secondly, compared with the same period last year, sales of medium to high end wine products increased during the Period following the Group's upgrade of its brands and products. Thirdly, the Group's sales team strengthened its cooperation with distributors, which purchased goods before festivals. This also demonstrated that the Group achieved phased progress through the implementation of sales and marketing reforms.

The Group expects to record a decrease in unaudited consolidated profit for the six months ended 30 June 2021 as compared with an unaudited consolidated profit of HK$142.6 million, which included a non-recurring gain of approximately HK$184 million from the disposal of a chateau and related facilities, for the same period last year.

This year, Dynasty has continued to focus on brand and product upgrades, sales and marketing reforms, and brand promotion. In terms of product strategy, the Group is further advancing its "5+4+N product strategy", in which "5" represents the five key product lines, namely the air dry series, seven-year reserve series, merlot series, classic series and best-selling series, to achieve the goal of full coverage across all mainstream price segments; "4" refers to the four dominant categories i.e. dry red wines, dry white wines, brandy and sparkling wines, to vertically increase the market share; and "N" stands for the development of various customized products to meet the diversified consumption needs of consumers in China.

Dynasty has launched three new products under its brandy series and upgraded the existing dry red wines and medium dry white wines series to promote sales of medium to high end wine products. It is also developing a young product series which it plans to sell via e-commerce channels. The Group held its first brandy tasting and business fair event this January and also took part in China Food & Drinks Fair held in Chengdu this April. During the fair, the Group actively promoted its latest product mix, which covers all product lines, and received an enthusiastic market response.

As for marketing, Dynasty has stepped up its efforts in brand promotion and advertising investment. Since March of this year, Dynasty has title sponsored a high-speed train which makes 49 trips a day across 13 provinces and municipalities, taking passengers to and from core areas of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai – Dynasty's key markets. The Group has also launched marketing efforts at offline points of sale in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region, as well as via its flagship online stores on JD.com and TMall, enabling the rollout of nationwide sales and marketing activities which delivered satisfactory results. Meanwhile, Dynasty has continued to expand its distribution channels, including tobacco and liquor shops, convenience stores and medium and large supermarkets, catering outlets and social communities. While fortifying the foundation of its traditional sales channels, it also penetrated social communities by flexibly organizing interactive and thematic activities and engaging opinion leaders and content marketing, so that it may have the benefit of diverse yet fully integrated channels. Dynasty will continue to press ahead with its mass-scale marketing campaign, encompassing advertising in 20,000 shops, hosting 1,000 wine tasting events and organizing 100 plant visits, in order to continue building and enhancing its point-of-sale network.

Looking ahead, Dynasty will address consumer demand through the constant innovation of its wine series. At the same time, it will increase investment in brand development so as to fully vitalize its brand. Moreover, it will drive development of its major products by steadily enhancing quality and controlling prices to boost sales volumes, with the overall aim of bringing Dynasty's wines to more consumers in China.

Tech, innovation, growth markets key to business recovery: HKTDC to focus on 14th Five-Year Plan opportunities

HONG KONG, Jun 11, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – In the face of continuing challenges in the global economy resulting from the pandemic, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will focus on helping businesses capture opportunities in Mainland China and other markets, especially in sectors that can ride on opportunities arising from the mainland's "dual circulation" strategy and 14th Five-Year Plan, as well as industry developments in technology, healthcare and sustainability.

In addition to promoting the city's overall advantages, services and products, the HKTDC will offer online and offline services for Hong Kong companies to speed up business expansion in the mainland market, using the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) as a bridgehead. It will also explore tripartite partnerships with mainland enterprises in overseas markets, especially the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

HKTDC Chairman Dr Peter Lam said that the past few years have been full of challenges, but the HKTDC will continue to work hard in helping businesses diversify and enhance their capabilities with sustainability and the adoption of technology and innovation as a core theme. He added that as parts of the world continue to tackle the pandemic while others are gradually recovering, Mainland China and its early recovery has been driving economic growth both internally and externally.

"We will create opportunities for businesses in both markets and industries. Apart from large-scale events, we will also strengthen our support and training services to help Hong Kong businesses capture opportunities arising from the mainland's 14th Five-Year Plan and 'dual circulation' strategy, taking the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as an entry point. As such, we just launched a GoGBA one-stop platform to support Hong Kong companies, and we will help them partner with mainland enterprises to tap international markets through the city's two-way platform," Dr Lam said.

Market opportunities: the GBA and "Dual Circulation" strategy

Following the launch of the GoGBA one-stop platform yesterday (10 June), the HKTDC is planning to organise SmartHK in Guangzhou on 8 December, highlighting the city's international networks and innovative professional services which are complementary to the Greater Bay Area development. Business matching meetings will be held to promote cooperation between mainland enterprises and Hong Kong services providers in the areas of finance, IT, infrastructure, design and more. A high-level mission led by senior government officials and commercial delegations will explore opportunities with their counterparts in the GBA.

Chic HK will be held in Shenzhen from 10-12 December to promote quality Hong Kong brands, stylish designs and technology and innovation products. It will be held in an online-to-offline format, allowing consumers to make purchases on the spot or online. A business mission will be held concurrently to connect Hong Kong traders with potential mainland buyers and partners, helping them to expand their nationwide retail networks.

The HKTDC will also introduce a new Star CEOs seminar series in which the top management of major mainland and overseas enterprises will share how the city's international business platform and professional services helps mainland companies tap opportunities in global markets, hoping this will attract more mainland companies to set up offices in Hong Kong. The HKTDC will set up a Hong Kong Pavilion in selected mainland trade fairs such as the China International Import Expo where Hong Kong's role in facilitating merchandise and service trade between the mainland and the rest of the world will be highlighted.

High-potential sectors: technology, healthcare and intellectual property

The 14th Five-Year Plan supports Hong Kong in consolidating and enhancing its competitive advantages. In addition to the traditional sectors such as finance, maritime and trading, it also supports the city to develop into an international innovation and technology hub and a regional intellectual property (IP) trading centre.

As such, the HKTDC will also launch a new Innotech Starter Programme in partnership with government agencies, incubators, R&D centres and universities to provide support and create opportunities for start-ups that are interested in expanding business in the Greater Bay Area. The HKTDC is also planning to organise seminars in Guangzhou, Nanjing and Beijing to promote Hong Kong's IP solutions in technology and innovation, as well as IP trade-related services. It will also further enrich the content of Asia IP Exchange and encourage different industries to step up adoption of homegrown innovative technology, especially patented technologies in environmental protection, sustainability, healthcare and well-being, building and construction and more.

Besides, demand for healthcare services is growing in Asia. As an international financial centre, Hong Kong is now the world's second-largest bio-tech fund-raising centre through initial public offerings. Together with a sound IP protection regime and a wealth of experts in commercialising innovations, the city is ready to become a healthcare innovation and investment hub. The HKSAR Government and the HKTDC will jointly organise the inaugural Asia Summit on Global Health on 24 November to attract investment, publicise the city's technology-related achievements and promote collaboration among industry players from Mainland China, Hong Kong and overseas.

Focusing on biotechnology, medical devices and drugs, digital health, community health and wellness, the Summit will help participants connect with investors and leading bio-tech companies in the Greater Bay Area.

Several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were also signed with the Leading Group Office of Guangdong on Construction of Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Shenzhen Municipal Committee, the People's Government of Shenzhen Futian District and five cities and districts in the GBA (Qianhai in Shenzhen, Nansha in Guangzhou, Hengqin in Zhuhai, Dongguan and Zhongshan), to expand the network of support for Hong Kong companies. After the ceremony, two webinars were held where companies that are already operating successfully in the GBA shared their business insights on how to succeed in the region.

Dr Peter K N Lam, Chairman of the HKTDC, said: "The GBA offers huge opportunities for businesses from Hong Kong and around the world. As more and more businesses look for prospects in the GBA, the HKTDC is here to help."

One-stop platform covers three major service areas

In line with the HKSAR Chief Executive's 2020 policy address, the GoGBA one-stop platform aims to help Hong Kong small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) tap into the GBA with three major support components:

1. Digital tool for cross-border business

The GoGBA digital platform, which consists of the GoGBA WeChat mini programme digital messaging platform, comes into service effective today. The GoGBA digital platform is run in collaboration with the government offices of Guangdong province and municipal governments in the GBA, providing important information on the region including updates on policies and subsidies, listings of related business and trade organisations, regional guides, and information on GBA government services and applications. It also offers practical tools such as weather forecasts, cross-border transportation information, interactive maps, details of public services, and income tax reminders. Media friends can scan the WeChat QR code included in this press release to download the GoGBA digital platform.

2. Advisory services and training

The HKTDC's Shenzhen office has set up the HKTDC GBA Centre to strengthen its support to SMEs interested in exploring the GBA market. Together with the HKTDC SME Centre in Hong Kong, the centres will organise a series of seminars and workshops, sharing sessions and advisory activities in group or individual formats, equipping companies with the practical knowledge and skillsets needed to succeed in the GBA.

The MoUs signed today will see the introduction of GoGBA Business Support Centres in Shenzhen (Qianhai), Guangzhou (Nansha), Zhuhai (Hengqin), Dongguan and Zhongshan. The HKTDC targets to introduce the centres in all nine mainland cities in the GBA, establishing a comprehensive support network that can connect companies with partners and consultants from across the GBA.

In addition, the HKTDC's Transformation Sandbox (T-box) programme will extend its services from Hong Kong to Shenzhen and other cities in the GBA. Together with the Digital Academy and E-Tailing Academy, the HKTDC will provide advisory workshops related to e-commerce and digital business as well as marketing solutions and other digital platforms.

3. HKTDC online and offline activities

The HKTDC has utilised various digital technologies to organise exhibitions and conferences, and will continue to plan and organise business missions and networking events by adopting a new "digital and physical" format for its major events and activities. It will also continue to enhance the hktdc.com Sourcing platform. The "Guangdong-Hong Kong Co-operation Week" will be held with the People's Government of Guangdong Province in December to promote Hong Kong products and services through flagship promotional events – SmartHK in Guangzhou and ChicHK in Shenzhen.

The HKTDC will continue its outreach efforts to help Hong Kong and overseas companies, and enterprises from other GBA cities, to establish connections, providing business matching sessions and advice on seeking business opportunities. The Council is currently planning to organise a wide range of activities in the mainland, including exhibitions and conferences, to help Hong Kong enterprises promote their products and services, explore business opportunities in GBA cities and gain practical experience at the same time.

Hong Kong and overseas companies share key to success in GBA

Representatives from Hong Kong and overseas companies gathered at this morning's launch event to share their success stories in capturing opportunities in mainland GBA cities through Hong Kong. Sharing their experiences in two separate sessions were Yan Lau, General Manager of Dongguan Dailywin Watch; Tommy Cheng, Founder and CEO of MY Super eCommerce Company; Jason Choi, Founder of DimYeah Studio & EGGY; Dawn Chui, General Manager – Pacific Rim of ORCA Asia; Joe Wan, CEO of Tricor Hong Kong; and Jefrey Hironaka Santo, Managing Director for Asia of Mundial.

ORCA is a Canadian company specialising in technology solutions for the treatment of food waste. Dawn Chui, General Manager – Pacific Rim of ORCA, said the pandemic has accelerated awareness of the need for food waste treatment in Hong Kong, and that an increasing number of hotels, campuses and restaurants are interested in their solutions. She said the company is optimistic about the mainland market. "The National 14th Five-Year Plan mentioned the issue of food waste management so we see great potential in venturing into this market. Hong Kong is the perfect springboard to Mainland China, with its free flow of capital very beneficial to corporate finance and one of the factors that encouraged us to establish a Hong Kong branch."

Yan Lau, General Manager of Dongguan Dailywin Watch, said the company set up its factory in Dongguan in the 1980s. Now, its Hong Kong headquarters is responsible for import, export, accounting and auditing functions, while the design, manufacturing and sales activities are carried out in Dongguan. Mr Lau said the company has put a big effort into building its own brand and last year launched the SAGA Moon Mars series to celebrate the achievements of the mainland's aerospace industry along with Dailywin's own achievements. During the pandemic, the company has shifted the focus to its online business and domestic sales, adopting new strategies such as e-commerce livestreaming with influencers and deploying new e-commerce and social e-commerce retail models. These new strategies have proved beneficial in helping the company's expansion in the mainland market.

Pertama Digital announces 4 product partners for its digital bank

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA, Jun 9, 2021 – (ACN Newswire) – Pertama Digital Berhad announced today that it has secured the first four product partners, Trevo, Paywatch, Qoala and Butterfly FX, which will bring expertise and solutions in their respective fields to plug into Pertama Digital's proposed digital bank. This comes after its recent announcements on securing Crowdo Holdings Pte Ltd and INFOPRO Sdn Bhd as consortium partners to apply for a digital banking licence from Bank Negara Malaysia.

In order to build a digital bank that empowers financially underserved Malaysians, Pertama Digital has built strong relationships with existing financial inclusion innovators, such as these companies, on ethical financial products addressing insurtech (takaful), gig economy and edtech.

Pertama Digital's Director of Strategy Saify Akhtar said: "We are very excited to collaborate with our new product partners to build financially inclusive solutions for the Rakyat. Over the years, we gained valuable experience and insights from delivering digital financial services to the financially underserved via MyPay and eJamin. Pertama Digital champions people-private-public partnerships and has attracted product experts within the local and regional financial inclusion ecosystem such as these four partners. We are taking position as the platform that facilitates flow of value between innovators and the Rakyat."

Trevo, Paywatch, Qoala and Butterfly FX share our common values to stay close to the Rakyat and permanently place customers at the centre of the digital bank strategy and business model. Together, our impactful solutions will help vulnerable Malaysians gain access to efficient, affordable and user-friendly digital financial services, which are needed now more than ever in the face of economic and social challenges presented by the pandemic."

Trevo, incorporated as Future Mobility Solutions Sdn Bhd, is a fully owned subsidiary of car-rental platform SOCAR Malaysia. Currently the largest P2P car-sharing marketplace in Southeast Asia, Trevo enables those not financially equipped to lease or purchase cars, to own one by only paying for it as needed. On the other hand, a different segment of users can make money from sharing their cars when it is not in use, which helps to alleviate the financial burden of servicing their monthly loan instalments. Pertama Digital will establish a Shariah-compliant short-to-medium term Digital Investment Trust that will be used to, among others, offer vehicle financing to the needy via Trevo's products. The digital bank will provide the initial seed fund and manage it on behalf of customers from the underserved group as micro-investors. This product allows individuals like delivery riders to not only earn an income doing deliveries but also from the very assets they use to do so; the vehicles.

Paywatch, a winner of the Gig Economy Challenge hosted by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), Bank Negara Malaysia, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and MetLife Foundation, partners with employers and banks to provide B40 workers instant access to earned wages, in real-time, before payday – without disrupting the existing human resource operations of employers. In collaboration with Pertama Digital, Paywatch strives to serve as a bridge for low-income workers to access low-cost financing directly from Paywatch's major financial institutional partners. In this way, they deter workers from turning to informal and predatory lenders and facilitate access to legitimate institutions for the financially underserved. As a regional player, Paywatch has offices in Seoul, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, with representatives in Singapore.

With its head office in Jakarta, Indonesia, Qoala is the leading insurtech in Southeast Asia that has expanded its reach across Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, helping millions of consumers get access to affordable insurance and convenient claims by leveraging technology. Qoala will work with Pertama Digital to help protect the financially underserved through takaful coverage for vehicle owners and operators among the B40 group, takaful payout to cover sick leave days and microtakaful to cover reduction in or loss of income of MSMEs and cash-earners.

EdTech provider Butterfly FX, part of the UNCDF Financial Innovation Lab cohort, is a women-led social enterprise that provides solutions for underserved communities. Their behaviour-based financial education platform is based on years of experience in financial literacy outreach serving Projek Perumahan Rakyat communities in Malaysia, combined with product design for global Fortune 500 companies. Microfinance institutions, fintechs and other institutions have leveraged their solutions in Malaysia, the Philippines and Haiti, to ensure better financial understanding and more informed financial product adoption, particularly in the area of micro-financing and credit for MSMEs. Pertama Digital will collaborate with Butterfly FX to equip underserved communities (including MSMEs) with knowledge and skills in personal finance management, in order to achieve positive financial well-being. The latter will provide bite-sized and principles-based content, including animations, to make the experience more memorable for learners' understanding and real-life application.

"The pandemic has surfaced opportunities to innovate and deploy solutions rapidly for both social and commercial gain, especially in the space of financial inclusion. Our research shows that a large number of small businesses and the Rakyat are concerned about the future of their income and livelihood. This is where our digital bank and all stakeholders in the financial ecosystem, can play a role for the greater good by coming together to help those of us who have been affected. We feel reassured about finding and working with these partners who have proven that their solutions will meet the nation's financial inclusion goals," concluded Saify.
