The Winning Bid: UNISOC takes the tender for China Unicom’s Chips

SHANGHAI, Sep 5, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – Results of the week's much-anticipated China Unicom Cat.1 large-scale tender have been released, with UNISOC winning the bid. According to published information, the procurement of 5 million Cat.1 sets was one of the largest among carriers to date. China Unicom's procurement will have a positive impact on the entire Internet of Things industry, and will promote rapid Cat.1 development. The successful bid for this project once again confirmed UNISOC's leadership in the Cat.1 field.

With large-scale construction of 5G networks, decommissioning processes for 2G/3G networks, policy level migration to NB-IoT/4G (including Cat.1)/5G networks with cellular IoT services, Cat.1 is poised for large-scale growth as the main driver in medium-term scenarios. UNISOC saw the development trend of IoT at an early stage, leading the industry with Cat.1 investment and application, and launching Chunto 8910DM, the world's first Cat.1bis chipset now widely used in the sharing economy, financial payment, public network intercom, energy, industrial control and other fields. Currently, there are dozens modules and other products equipped with Chunto 8910DM chipsets on the market, applied to wide-ranging fields and scenarios.

UNISOC and China Unicom will continue to cooperate on Cat.1 for the Internet of Things. By integrating their resources to advantage, the two will promote the large-scale application of Cat.1 across the industry as they build out industrial chip-network-platform solutions in future. Expect to see hardware (chips, modules, PCBA, etc.) equipped with UNISOC chips combined with Unicom's 4G/5G cellular network capabilities, as well as platform capabilities such as a connectivity management platform (CMP) and device management platform (DMP), providing industry customers with one-stop IoT solutions that meet their needs and facilitate the rapid development of the IoT.

5G Dark Horse — UNISOC Breaks the Siege

SHANGHAI, Aug 28, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – In June, Counterpoint Research released "Cellular Technology Transitions and Potential for SoC Players". The report puts forward that the 5G wave is an inevitable trend and the global baseband market sales will exceed $38.7 billion by 2024. The global handset baseband manufacturers have a unique advantages in the future 5G network transition process.

According to the report, 5G handset shipments are expected to reach 1.16 billion units in 2024, with a CAGR of 137%, accounting for 70% of total handset shipments. From the perspective of chip suppliers, 5G chips are more complex and with higher threshold. At present, independent chip suppliers are still dominated by Qualcomm, MediaTek and UNISOC.

The research points out that Qualcomm is offering an end-to-end portfolio from SoC, modem, complete RF Front End (RFFE) to antenna supporting both sub-6GHz to mmWave. This portfolio is ahead of its competitors from a feature-set to a commercial availability perspective. It has captured more than half of the 5G market share. MediaTek is also ramping up its Dimensity 5G series.

And another chip supplier, UNISOC announced its first 2G/3G/4G/5G multi-mode modem V510 at MWC 2019. The 3GPP Rel.15 compliant 5G modem supports both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) networks, as well as 5G VoNR in SA mode, fitting well into the different stages of 5G development. Together with Hisense, UNISOC successfully commercialized its first generation 5G platform, with the UNISOC V510 powering the Hisense F50 smartphone.

Last November, UNISOC V510 modem was awarded the 2019 World Electronics Achievement Award, helping UNISOC further establish a solid foundation as a leading 5G solution provider.

In February this year, UNISOC unveiled its next-gen 5G SoC platform – the T7520. Utilizing a more advanced 6nm EUV process, which has 18% higher transistor density and 8% lower power consumption versus current 7nm processes, the T7520 offers compelling performance package with improved power consumption.

Its optimized multi-core design incorporates four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55, a Mali-G57 based GPU, an upgraded NPU, as well as enhanced multimedia processing units to enable capabilities of 100MP and multicamera processing, up to 120Hz refresh rate and multi-screen displays.

The T7520 also showed significant improvement in terms of 5G experience, with the support of 5G NR TDD+FDD carrier aggregation, LTE and NR spectrum dynamic sharing, and uplink and downlink decoupling. Importantly, with its innovative 5G super uplink technology, the T7520 can enhance coverage by more than 100%, increase uplink speeds by up to 60% and improve peak downlink speeds to more than 3.25Gbps under SA mode. All of these advanced features make the T7520 highly competitive with mainstream platforms targeting high-spec smartphones.

In addition, Counterpoint also points out in the report that 5G not only sets off a wave of smartphone upgrading, but also brings great opportunities in some segments that are easily ignored by the industry. InfoComm Southeast Asia 2021 GoVIRTUAL: Shifting Events Online to Serve Businesses

SINGAPORE, Aug 27, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – COVID-19 may have disrupted the events industry, but event organizers like InfoCommAsia are continuing to play the critical role of connecting businesses by shifting their events online.

As its premier showcase for global Professional AudioVisual and Integrated Experience Solutions in Southeast Asia – InfoComm Southeast Asia – will be held in 2021 instead of 2020, InfoCommAsia has launched a powerful virtual platform to serve businesses in the year-long lead-up to the actual event.

On the need for the platform which is named InfoComm Southeast Asia 2021 GoVIRTUAL, Mr. Richard Tan, the executive director of InfoCommAsia, said: "With the worldwide disruption to industries and events, it is more critical than ever that exhibitors continue to have the platforms to seek out new clients, and for visitors to search for cutting-edge technology solutions to meet swiftly evolving needs in the new digital era.

"GoVIRTUAL is an intuitive platform we have developed which allows businesses to meet those needs, anywhere and anytime. This will allow our exhibitors and visitors to continue doing business from wherever they are in the run-up to InfoComm Southeast Asia 2021."

The platform, which is already running, will not only functionally replicate the in-person show experience with a range of easy-to-use features, it goes beyond to augment the business experience for all participants.

A Powerful Twin Engine

In addition to webinars and product showcase pages, the platform's unique features include Virtual Product Demonstrations – which enable exhibitors to demonstrate their products and solutions anywhere including from their offices, experience centers or onsite and carry out real-time dialogues and interact with buyers who are watching online – and Livestreaming, which allows thousands to observe and hear the proceedings from around the world at the same time.

In addition, GoVIRTUAL utilizes AI algorithms to generate valuable lists of the most relevant prospective clients for exhibitors. These lists are derived based on visitor registration data, and data collected over time on how these visitors interact on the platform – the webinars they attend, the solutions they search for, and the exhibitors they network with.

Networking and interaction can be conducted 24/7 via multi-layered chat tools from one-to-one chats to private meetings and small-group networking lounges.

Mr. Tan said, "As tech event organizers, this is also an opportunity for us to embrace new ways of helping businesses to achieve the greater outcomes. GoVIRTUAL not only allows our exhibitors to promote their solutions both visually and with audio in real-time while conversing with buyers, the AI helps them to pre-qualify their prospects. It is exactly what they would be doing in their booths at our show."

New Date for InfoComm Southeast Asia 2021

InfoComm Southeast Asia 2021 is rescheduled to take place from 20-22 October 2021, while the venue remains unchanged at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre.

Last announced that it would be held from 19-21 May 2021, the dates were pushed back owing to new COVID-19 developments in Southeast Asian countries, some of which are still grappling with managing the situation. Vaccines, if successfully developed, are not likely to be made readily available until mid-2021.

Said Mr. Tan, "We, therefore, rescheduled our show to October to de-risk it and ensure that our exhibitors and visitors will have a safe and enjoyable experience. But what is key is that our exhibitors remain invested in Southeast Asia, which has been identified as a growth market in 2021."

According to a report by research and consulting firm Frost and Sullivan, the region is projected to become the world's fourth-largest market after China, the European Union and the United States, by 2030. Its GDP is forecast to increase from US$2.4 trillion in 2015 to US$5.2 trillion in 2025.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also driven up demand for digital applications and innovations in the region.

Added Mr Tan, "Through GoVIRTUAL, and InfoComm Southeast Asia 2021, businesses can leverage the growing potential of the Southeast Asian region, and be a part of its post-pandemic growth story."

5G powers up IoT

HONG KONG, Jul 31, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – Communications technology reached a historic milestone at the beginning of April this year as Hong Kong's fifth-generation mobile (5G) network was officially fully connected, linking all major communication equipment.

A 5G network provides much more than just increased bandwidth and speed – 5G provides the opportunity to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) technology to bring the much-discussed Internet of Things (IoT) out of the laboratory and into the real world. To give people from all walks of life a better understanding of 5G networks, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) held the Tech Trends Symposium 2020 – The Future of Intelligent Connectivity on 28 July. Forming part of the HKTDC's Summer Sourcing Weeks | Go ONLINE virtual trade fair (27 July-7 August), the symposium was streamed online. At a session titled "Empowering a Connected Future with 5G", industry leaders introduced the latest developments in 5G networks and expressed the hope that Hong Kong will keep pace with the world in moving towards 5G and building a smart city.

Research focus

5G networks could turn the established business-to-customer (B2C) model on its head and profoundly change consumers' experiences, said Justin Chuang, Vice President, Communications Technologies at the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI).

Citing examples, he said real-time augmented reality (AR), a 360-degree visual experience and ultra-clear imaging will profoundly change traditional marketing and publicity models. Business-to-business (B2B) transactions could expand in scale, while autonomous vehicles, smart offices and smart factories could be linked up through 5G systems to improve productivity.

Manufacturing reworked

More importantly, Mr Chuang pointed out, 5G networks could deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and a marriage of the two would completely change the ecology of manufacturing. Factories would be able to use automated vehicles, robots and monitoring sensors. AI applications, instead of human managers, would coordinate and monitor this fully automated production system. Human engineering expertise could be applied to remotely formulating workflows and ordering work patterns. The saved human resources could then concentrate on quality monitoring and decision-making, said Mr Chuang. He believes 5G is not only a new era of networks but also a way to promote the progress of the entire city.

ICT overhaul

The April 5G launch in Hong Kong saw telecommunications companies swiftly rolling out services on networks the city's main telecommunications companies had set up.

Henry Wong, Head of Strategic Wireless Technology & Core Networks at local telecommunications company HKT Limited, said network technology in Hong Kong has advanced step by step in recent decades from voice and data Internet access to the latest 5G networks. The speed and usage pattern of the network had improved. During the 2G and 3G eras, watching videos was just about viewing. With 4G came high-definition videos and video conferences but the network was prone to time delays and freezes or even bad frames on screen.

5G, however, supports not only a wide range of visual innovations such as high-definition multi-dimensional 360-degree images, but also interactivity thanks to virtual reality (VR) technology which enables the screen view to change to match users' movements and become whatever the user wants to see.

4G technology was unable to fully support VR, and there were lags and delays in transmitting images, which greatly weakened the application of VR, Mr Wong added.

Changes are also impacting television broadcasting. Citing the example of HKT's pay TV, Mr Wong said on-demand viewing, as opposed to the traditional broadcast-by-schedule model, has been introduced in recent years and audiences can freely choose viewing times for content such as concerts, sports events and more without the limitation of a schedule, which improves convenience. The 5G network can combine these two modes to give high-definition, freely selectable content, even including 360-degree virtual-reality images, presented directly to the audience, he remarked.

Property play

In addition to expanding network bandwidth, 5G permits the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) to begin in earnest, according to Andrew Young, Associate Director (Innovation) for Sino Group, A leading Hong Kong real-estate developer.

Mr Young said 5G networks could bring in a raft of Massive IoT technologies such as smart building, logistics tracking and smart agriculture. The networks could also permit time-dependent Critical IoT applications such as Remote Medical, Traffic Safety Control and Industrial Automation.

IoT applications are more reliable on 5G networks with less time delay and the ability to process large amounts of data quickly and efficiently. In the real-estate sector 5G networks could be used in such applications analysing the flow of people in shopping malls and gauging their consumption habits, helping managements adjust the distribution of stores and arrange activities based on the analysis.

These 5G technology applications could become "pervasive". Mr Young pointed out that 5G can handle a large amount of data but the subsequent data processing and storage would inevitably raise network security concerns. While the networks develop rapidly, personal information and network security should also be protected, so the 5G network can continue to grow healthily.

Noting the potential of smart buildings and related technologies, Sino Group established the Sino Creative Research and Development Office in 2018 to monitor related technology trends and introduce technologies such as artificial intelligence (AR) and robotics into the group's business. It analyses the potential of innovative technology, including 5G, under three criteria – business model, operation process and customer experience.

Fujitsu Develops Technology to Optimize Deployment of Millimeter-Wave Private 5G System Base Stations

KAWASAKI, Japan, Jul 22, 2020 – (ACN Newswire) – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of new, high-speed computing technology to significantly streamline the deployment of wireless base stations compatible with 28 GHz millimeter-wave private 5G systems.

Fig. 2 Faster search for beamforming patterns using radio wave simulation results

Private 5G demonstrates great promise as a key infrastructure technology to support digital transformation (DX) for a variety of companies across different industries and business areas, delivering low-latency communications for applications as varied as AI video analysis on worksites to seamless remote operations for robots in manufacturing and medical facilities. In order to realize this technology's true potential, however, it is essential to optimize the deployment of wireless base stations. This often proves challenging, and despite its wide bandwidth the millimeter wave band remains difficult to handle because of its susceptibility to interference, including obstruction by surrounding obstacles. To avoid this, radio experts are often needed to determine the correct location of wireless base stations, which remains costly and requires extensive field adjustments.

With its new technology, Fujitsu has successfully developed a high-speed algorithm that can automatically calculate the best placement for private 5G millimeter wave base stations 5 to 10 times faster than conventional approaches. The technology also accounts for the adjustment of parameters including transmission power, radio channel, antenna direction and position, which makes it easier for non-radio experts to determine layouts for wireless base stations for private 5G systems.

Going forward, Fujitsu will continue to advance its automated design technology and aims to leverage it in the area design of its private 5G system integration service within fiscal 2020.

Challenges, About the Newly Developed Technology

Fujitsu has previously developed an automatic wireless base station design technology(1) that enables non-specialists to design and install wireless LAN networks in a day or so, instead of the previous seven-day work required by wireless experts, by using radio wave simulation technology that makes use of the knowledge of network technology we have accumulated over the years. However, the millimeter-wave band is more direct than microwaves of 6 GHz or less, which to date have been used mainly in cellular and wireless LANs. Therefore, the millimeter-wave band is easily affected by surrounding obstacles, and furthermore, the signal attenuation is large when the distance between the base station and the terminal increases. Therefore, by controlling the antenna with many antenna elements to perform beamforming(2), it is important to increase signal power and compensate for attenuation by directing radio waves to each terminal.

In designing a private 5G system in the millimeter-wave band, the number of base stations required increases due to the attenuation characteristics of the millimeter-wave. Additionally, many combinations need to be explored to estimate the effect of beamforming, which greatly increases the amount of computation required for automatic wireless base station deployment. As a result, it may take more than one day for each high-precision simulation on a typical desktop PC in an office, etc., and shortening the calculation time remains a important challenge to overcome.

To resolve these issues, Fujitsu Laboratories developed the technology described below:

Optimal parallelization technology for radio wave simulation calculation

Radio wave simulation has a branching structure that performs simulation calculations of propagation for each route in each combination of base stations and terminals for calculation scenarios that consist of movement or change of surrounding objects, base station candidate positions, and terminal candidate positions. When the CPU is allocated in parallel by dividing the calculation at the path level of the smallest unit of calculation as in the conventional method, the simulation time varies because the distance and the presence of obstacles differ depending on the path, and the overhead due to the synchronous processing of parallelization is large. On the other hand, dividing the calculation at the scenario level of the largest unit of calculation may make it hard to fully utilize the computing resources of the processor when the number of scenarios is small.

Taking advantage of the fact that parallelization is possible without any dependency between nodes in each hierarchy of the calculation tree of the radio wave simulation, Fujitsu has developed a parallel acceleration technology for the radio wave simulation calculation that minimizes the overhead caused by parallelization and maximizes the use of computing resources by automatically selecting the optimal hierarchy from the calculation tree at all times, taking into account the number of CPUs in the calculation environment(3). This is achieved by first dividing the processing in a hierarchy where the number of nodes in the hierarchy is equal to or larger than the number of CPUs when the tree is moved down one layer from the top of the tree structure to the number of CPUs in the calculation environment, and allocating the processing to the CPUs. This technology enables efficient and fast computation at all times in a variety of processor and core configurations, from laptops to workstations.

In addition, in the simulation of beamforming, which takes into account the directionality of antennas for millimeter-wave band private 5G systems, instead of the conventional method of searching for a combination of base station and terminal beam patterns, 1/10 the range of search can be narrowed down based on information such as the direction of radio waves and signal intensity obtained from the results of radio wave simulation, and the characteristic amounts of the base station and terminal beam patterns.

Outcomes

The newly developed technology enables the calculation of radio wave simulation and beamforming performance estimation to be accelerated by 5 to 10 times at maximum. For example, when high-precision radio wave simulation is conducted with 24 wireless base station position candidates and 40,000 terminal position candidates in a place simulating a factory with an area of 10,000 square meters, the calculation can be completed in about two hours with a desktop computer. This represents a considerable improvement over existing approaches and promises to accelerate planning for the placement of terminals and wireless base stations for private 5G systems in the field, delivering customers the chance to accelerate the digital transformation of their operations.

(2) Beamforming technique for concentrating radio waves in a specific direction by controlling the phase (Angle) of a signal emitted by an antenna element on an antenna panel.
(3) number of CPUs in the calculation environment Strictly speaking, the number of concurrent threads.
